Über diesen Titel

Two warriors shepherd an ancient god across a broken land to end the tyrannical reign of a royal family in this epic fantasy from the author of The Vanished Birds.

“A beguiling fantasy not to be missed.”—Evelyn Skye, New York Times bestselling author of The Crown’s Game

WINNER OF THE IAFA CRAWFORD AWARD WINNER OF THE BRITISH FANTASY AWARD SHORTLISTED FOR THE URSULA K. LE GUIN AWARD SHORTLISTED FOR THE IGNYTE AWARD

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Oprah Daily, Vulture, Polygon, She Reads, Gizmodo, Kirkus Reviews, The Quill to Live

The people suffer under the centuries-long rule of the Moon Throne. The royal family—the despotic emperor and his monstrous sons, the Three Terrors—hold the countryside in their choking grip. They bleed the land and oppress the citizens with the frightful powers they inherited from the god locked under their palace.

But that god cannot be contained forever.

With the aid of Jun, a guard broken by his guilt-stricken past, and Keema, an outcast fighting for his future, the god escapes from her royal captivity and flees from her own children, the triplet Terrors who would drag her back to her unholy prison. And so it is that she embarks with her young companions on a five-day pilgrimage in search of freedom—and a way to end the Moon Throne forever. The journey ahead will be more dangerous than any of them could have imagined.

Both a sweeping adventure story and an intimate exploration of identity, legacy, and belonging, The Spear Cuts Through Water is an ambitious and profound saga that will transport and transform you—and is like nothing you’ve ever read before.

The story of you, among other specatators in this inverted theater is riddled with tragedy, hope and love. I couldn't stop listening to it, be it dificult to understand at first, this story is greatness itself.

one of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of encountering

Takes a little time to get used to the narrative inside of the narrative, but worth every minute of it.

Beautifully written. One of the rare books that made me cry. Highly immersive and engaging.

This is a love story. And an epic tale of adventure and war told in multiple tongues. In an old country we follow two uncommon heroes, formerly outcast, which do not yet know love and belonging, on the winding roads to save the country and to find a purpose - and ultimately themselves.

Multiple strands of different times and tales and many tongues are beautifully interwoven in this well crafted masterpiece. The old country is spun of threads of magic and gods and effortlessly includes queer and disabled representation. Well done and oh so enjoyable.

The speaker Joel de la Fuente succeeds beautifully in carving out the many voices contributing to this multidimensional tale.

A Captivating Epic Tale Told in Many Tongues

This was such a surprise. It’s whimsy, but dark. With absolutely beautiful writing and two main characters that will stick with me for a long time.

This book is so underrated and a true hidden gem. It’s something different and will challenge you at parts, but it is so vibrant and hopeful in the end. 10/10

through the story I was often wondering, how the author thought of such a great story. it feels like a lovestory to all storytellers of our childhood, the people in our families and cultures who tell the old stories of our culture and weave new tales.
the narrator did a fantastic job, through him the story really came alive. and yet, which doesn't happen often, I will go and look for a physical copy of the book. because this story is worthy of a place in my bookshelf, to not be forgotten, to be shared among my family and friends like lola shared her stories.
the story which lola tells wasn't the focal point for me so I won't say much about that. I was more drawn to the feel of the story, to the overarching theme of storytelling itself and I find myself wishing for slow evenings where stories are exchanged, not ones to fright the audience but bittersweet and yet hopeful ones like this one

whimsical hopeful sad and yet utterly fulfilling
