A thrillingly told space opera about the wreckage of war, the family you find, and the path you must forge when every choice is stripped from you. Some Desperate Glory is the highly anticipated debut novel from Astounding Award and World Fantasy Award-Winner, Emily Tesh.
All her life, Kyr has trained for the day she can avenge the destruction of planet Earth. Raised on Gaea Station alongside the last scraps of humanity, she is one of the best warriors of her generation, the sword of a dead planet.
Then Command assigns her brother to certain death and relegates her to the nursery to bear sons, and she knows she must take humanity's revenge into her own hands. Alongside her brother's brilliant but seditious friend and a lonely, captive alien, Kyr must escape from everything she's ever known. If she succeeds, she will find a universe far more complicated than she was taught and far more wondrous than she could ever have imagined
'A profoundly humane and brilliantly constructed space opera that will have you cheering, swearing, laughing, and ugly-crying. It's perfect' Alix E. Harrow, New York Times-bestselling author of The Once and Future Witches
'This book is astoundingly good. An explosive and extraordinary story that I couldn't stop reading and will never forget' Everina Maxwell, author of Winter's Orbit

Good performance, lacking story
Excellent performance though the voice is a bit to bubbly for my taste. Still five stars on performance.
The story is not bad but lacks depth and has its inconsistencies. I didn’t find it very gripping in terms of the action, so it is a pity that the emotional, social and philosophical aspects weren’t particularly intriguing, either.
In the very beginning humans are described (or rather criticized) as a race overtly valuing individual heroism. But the book offers little beside a tale of individual heroism. The outset that a bunch of teenagers (primarily one) that grew up in a tiny fascist enclave with little to no contact to the outside world could outsmart, sabotage and ultimately fix the system of a universe inhabited by several sentient races some technologically much more advanced than humans is not very believable and rather juvenile.
The book has its good moments on overcoming indoctrination and egotistical worldviews, but even there everything appears just too easy to feel realistic.
I might have enjoyed this much more in my late teens or early twenties. Not sure, however, if I had learned much from it then.

Very enjoyable listen!
I enjoyed listening to this story. Although I never had this nail biting feeling “when can I get back to it”. The story has a beautiful end that leaves me confused nonetheless. Some things don’t quite tie up for me there. But this could just be me. Performance by Sean Bryer is outstanding though! 10 out of 10 narration no doubt there. Would I crave a sequel? Probably not so much.

Everything I want from science fiction
There was engaging character development, big moral questions and small human problems, shifts in perspective, some big surprises and very skillful storytelling. I was very well entertained and am looking forward to reading or listening to more from the authors.

A SciFi Small Space Opera
characters, not too many
character development
dealing with fascist organizations
very deep
time travel fix-it
like the best of what fanfiction can do
SciFi but make it about people, not tech and space wars
nerds and fascism
what an ending
