Fascinating
It is the beginning of a narrative that is detailed and captivating in the same way as Expanse. I can't wait to read/listen to the second volume.

Sci-Fi that gave me food for thought
If you like space battle and explosions, look elsewhere!
After finishing the Expanse Series and the various spinoffs, I was very pleased to find this new book by the writers duo James S.A. Corey.
The story invites you to a new world in a different universe, where an alien empire seizes to rule over or exterminate other species. „Be useful and live.“ I‘m equally amazed and appalled by the alien philosophy.
At times I got a little lost with the amount of people this story follows.
Can’t wait to see how this story further unfolds in the sequel.

A mysterious new glimpse into the future
A good new beginning for the authors of The Expanse. To listerners of that former series, this will feel very familiar thanks to Jefferson Mays. The story, while different, still offers that slow untangling and understanding of a bigger mystery, together with interesting characters.

Gets better half way through
Mercy of the Gods has a somehow uneven start with a lot happening but just a little being described during the first half. In its latter half, where fragmented plotlines converge into a high-stakes narrative the novel gets much butter. In the beginning the characters take some decissions that are hard to believe - this improves as the divine forces only teased earlier start to challenge the characters and their morals - this when the novel is a thrill. Themes of sacrifice and power shine, while the prose gains a mythic depth and thus rewards patient reading. Now I am looking forward to the second book.

Surprisingly boring
Tried several times. Couldn' t finish it. Dull characters and most of the time nothing is happening. Made it until 8hours remaining, when I was overwhelmed by the feeling of boredom and wasting my time. Thought after The Expanse this would be a no brainer bad sadly not.

Definitely not The Expanse, but still a great concept
I love the both writers, but the new series is definitely a slow burn in development.
The concept is great, but it is very slow and I did not manage to bond with the characters, which is sad, because I know that both writers can do better. I had immediately a connection to the characters of The Expanse, but not here. In a way, everyone seems very similar and I don't have the feeling that I even understood who is alive and who died, because the were all so similar. I would still read the next one because I want to see, where it will go.

Höchstwahrscheinlich bin ich zu dumm
Mir sind es zuviele Figuren. Mir ist die Geschichte zu träge. Ich erkenne, dass sie sich wirklich bemüht haben, die beiden. Ich weiß, sie können es besser als ich. Trotzdem holt mich die Geschichte in Summe nicht ab. Aber das liegt höchstwahrscheinlich an mir…
