2018 Locus Award, Best Science Fiction Novel

Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars.

Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

The Flow is eternal - but it is not static. Just as a river changes course, The Flow changes as well, cutting off worlds from the rest of humanity. When it's discovered that The Flow is moving, possibly cutting off all human worlds from faster-than-light travel forever, three individuals - a scientist, a starship captain, and the empress of the Interdependency - are in a race against time to discover what, if anything, can be salvaged from an interstellar empire on the brink of collapse.

Kritikerstimmen

"Fans of Game of Thrones and Dune will enjoy this bawdy, brutal, and brilliant political adventure." (Booklist)

"Scalzi has constructed a thrilling novel so in tune with the flow of politics that it would feel relevant at almost any time." (Entertainment Weekly)

"Political plotting, plenty of snark, puzzle-solving, and a healthy dose of action…Scalzi continues to be almost insufferably good at his brand of fun but think-y sci-fi adventure." (Kirkus Reviews)

wish it was longer, feels a bit cliffhanger-y. But itching for a Sequel means its good.

Good Start of a Series

Containing the usual twists and surprises, the story is captivating, and physically adequate. I especially enjoyed Wil Wheaton.

interesting story line

Whoa! I never had THAT much fun since I was two years old and trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole! A clever plot and fast and witty dialogues that sometimes make you blush, sometimes make you burst out in laughter, but always leave you with the feeling that you just experienced something marvellous. It has a way of making you like even the evil charactars, just the same way an almost eight seasons long TV show, that never must be named again, did. But contrary to that one, this book is totally worth it. And Will Wheaton as narrator perfectly nails it. A match made in heaven. Caution: may contain sarcasm.

Why aren't you reading this book RIGHT NOW?

This book is a long introduction into a sci fi story with some fresh ideas. the audio book is highly entertaining, mostly due to the fun way of the narrator. can recommend.

Nice story, great narrator

And Wil Wheaton is a fantastic speaker. Their individual geniuses are intertwinding to form a spectacular listening experience. 5/5 would recommend.

John scalzi is undeniable a very witty author.

...only this story is far less frustrating.
Forget lightspeed: in this universe, shouting at people to solve a Problem actually works!

Star-Trek meets Game of Thrones...

Scalzi is a very interesting writer. The books are so different. In my humble opinion, his style improves, no 'he said,... She said...' it's however less and less action driven and rather a long developing plot with much intrigue. But I very much like it.
Wil Wheaton is amazing, very versatile, very convincing, never annoying.

Less action, more intrigue, good humor too

I don't know about the grievances some have with Will Wheaton's reading. I liked it a lot and his reading style matched perfectly with Scalzi's witty writing style.

Worth your time

Cool story, I hated Wil Wheaton in StarTrek, found him mediocre in Big Bang Theory but loved him here. Fits perfectly here. Real fun.

Very human politics in SciFi

Even though the audio book seems to be quite short in comparison to other popular space operas, there‘s quite some content to digest.

The pace of the progression of the story is continuous and fast giving you enough space for your imagination without getting lost in too many detailed descriptions.

The world described in the book is believable and I didn’t experience irritating logical errors, which is a rare feat among sci-fi and fantasy authors.

People, who are easily offended by a lot of swearing, probably shouldn’t buy the book though, because especially one of the characters uses the f-word in almost any sentence.

Sooo. If you like The Commonwealth universe by Peter Hamilton, you probably will be quite happy with the Interdependency narrative. If you don’t, because of too much detail and slow progress, you‘ll still probably like it.

Great story with Wheaton as a surprisingly good narrator
