NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “It’s Lovecraft meets the Brontës in Latin America, and after a slow-burn start Mexican Gothic gets seriously weird.”—The Guardian

ONE OF
TIME’S 100 BEST MYSTERY AND THRILLER BOOKS OF ALL TIME • WINNER OF THE LOCUS AWARD • NOMINATED FOR THE BRAM STOKER AWARD

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR:

An isolated mansion. A chillingly charismatic aristocrat. And a brave socialite drawn to expose their treacherous secrets. . . . From the author of
Gods of Jade and Shadow comes “a terrifying twist on classic gothic horror” (Kirkus Reviews) set in glamorous 1950s Mexico.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find—her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

“It’s as if a supernatural power compels us to turn the pages of the gripping Mexican Gothic.”—The Washington Post

“Mexican Gothic is the perfect summer horror read, and marks Moreno-Garcia with her hypnotic and engaging prose as one of the genre’s most exciting talents.”—Nerdist

“A period thriller as rich in suspense as it is in lush ’50s atmosphere.”—Entertainment Weekly

Kritikerstimmen

“An inspired mash-up of Jane Eyre, Ann Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho, Dracula, Rebecca and that 1958 classic sci-fi movie, The Blob . . . Inventive and smart, [Mexican Gothic is] injecting the Gothic formula with some fresh blood.”—NPR’s Fresh Air

“Stylish and edgy. . . While the book draws inspiration from Gothic classics like Rebecca and Jane Eyre—there is a spunky female protagonist and an ancient house filled with disturbing secrets—its archly intelligent tone and insightful writing make Mexican Gothic an original escape to an eerie world.”New York Times

“[An] irresistibly dark feminist reimagining of the Gothic fantasy novel . . . It’s all wonderfully creepy, blending chilling scenes of horror with classic Gothic tropes for a seductive and subversive tale. A book to devour in a few—very thrilling—sittings.”Vanity Fair

Not the best writing

I didn’t like that the writer was thinking the readers thoughts out loud. It made it seem like a childrens book. Great voice acting

an interesting horror scenario

What I liked:
Just as the title promises, this is a classic haunted house story with gothic themes of sickness, decay and dark secrets. The heroine is a young woman with some ambitions.
The story is well written and I liked it overall. There are some deeper themes relating to colonial history and sexism that could be explored. The conflicts within the family that lives in the house were interesting.
There is a fairly prominent romance arc that I enjoyed.

What I didn't like:
I felt like the main character didn't have a lot of personality. She also didn't have much of a reaction to any of the extreme things she witnesses in the story. So they all stayed a bit flat for me as a reader, too.
The way the story resolved is pretty standard for a horror novel, the same basic plot beats have appeared in any corruption themed horror story for the past 20 years. Sometimes it felt almost intentional, as if the author was just waving in the direction of some plot point and saying "this is where the beautiful intersects with the grotesque, you know how it goes".

The audio narration is fairly monotonous and extremely slow. The slowness can be remedied by using the speed settings of Audible. The monotony remains.

All in all, a solid 3 star experience.

Had to fight my way through it

While it was atmospheric, it was simply too long. Although the plottwist and main aspects of the story would normally make for an interesting story, the characters felt too dull at times and the chapters sometimes neither moved the plot nor developed the characters. Most of the story had to be explained through other characters instead of the protagonist actively working to unravel it. Naomi was often described as smart, but somehow never got the chance to prove it. Instead, every other character had to push her for her to even make a decision. Still going to read and listen to Moreno-Garcias future works because I enjoyed 'Gods of Jade and Shadow', but I can't deny that this was a disappointing read.
