Make Time - A Different Sort of "Self Help Book"
This review would need to be split into content and execution as there are different factors I need to be considering while writing this review.
Firstly, the content:
I found Make Time a very engaging book, filled with extremely helpful advices, sprinkled with nice and relevant stories meant to set an example.
As the authors state, this isn't a productivity oriented self help book pee se. But rather a collection of ideas that help you rethink your day and priorities. I'd particularly enjoyed the idea of using Make Time as you would a cook book. You wouldn't try all at once and not all recipes work for everybody.
All in all, the content is of high level and I can't wait to hear it again, this time while actively taking notes and applying the different methods to my life.
The execution:
Since gett the book, I have listened to it at whenever I got the chance. While walking, commuting, cooking or cleaning. Jake and John speak clearly and are able to transmit their excitement well. It is clear that they invested a lot of time into the book and took the audiobook recording process seriously.
The only odd choice was having them read the chapter titles simultaneously and panning them hard left and right. As a music producer, this odd choice got me thinking more about the booth they were sitting in, the microphone model and position, the EQ and compression used, rather than actually focusing on the content itself. It's be no means a deal breaker though.
Listening to the audiobook vs. reading:
This is the first book of this genre that I listen to rather than read. The audiobook is well put and I enjoyed it thoroughly, even though I think I might have been more focused if I had a kindle copy so I could take notes more frequently.
I'd suggest anyone who wants to be productive to read or listen to this book. Not because it reveals any secrets about how to cram 20 meetings a day before breakfast and replying to all your emails while brushing your teeth. Rather, it's there to remind you that family time, me time, friends time, health time and sleep are all things that shouldn't be neglected. The book is there to help you find your own way to make room for those times and I think that the authors did a good job at it.
