Über diesen Titel
The acclaimed New York Times and USA Today best-selling novel of small-town evil that “is genuinely chilling and something brand-new and exciting” (Stephen King) and “unforgettable” (Harlan Coben).
In the summer of 1988, the mutilated bodies of several missing girls begin to turn up in a small Maryland town. The grisly evidence leads police to the terrifying assumption that a serial killer is on the loose in the quiet suburb. But soon a rumor begins to spread that the evil stalking local teens is not entirely human. Law enforcement, as well as members of the FBI, are certain that the killer is a living, breathing madman - and he’s playing games with them. For a once peaceful community trapped in the depths of paranoia and suspicion, it feels like a nightmare that will never end.
Recent college graduate Richard Chizmar returns to his hometown just as a curfew is enacted and a neighborhood watch is formed. Amid preparing for his wedding and embarking on a writing career, he soon finds himself thrust into a real-life horror story. Inspired by the terrifying events, Richard writes a personal account of the serial killer’s reign of terror, unaware that these events will continue to haunt him for years to come.
A clever, terrifying, and heartrending work of metafiction, Chasing the Boogeyman is the ultimate marriage between horror fiction and true crime. Chizmar’s “dazzling work of fresh imagination and psychological insight” (Caroline Kepnes, New York Times best-selling author of You) is on full display in this truly unique novel that will haunt you long after you listen to the final minute.

Narrator‘s voice was too smooth - fell asleep all the time
Therefore, to be honest. I did not really get a lot of the story. At some point I was sick of restarting the chapters. I either fell asleep because of the smooth voice or my mind wandered off as in Meditation. I think I need to read the book. Not hear it.

That's good storytelling (with hammy narration)
I loved the writing, but, should anyone read this, I gotta say about the acting: wow...that...was...hammy. I think the intended audience was us adults, but the narrator was acting like a teenager telling what they thought was an extraordinarily good joke and so had to say every word...with...very...dramatic...pauses and intonation, which was a bit grating at times. Get over that and the long descriptions in the beginning, and you'll get a wowza of a story.

True-crime style book, but no horror
The book is written in true-crime style, but despite reviews and tags, there is no horror here.
The concept is a good one and the setup is strong, but the book meanders through the small town, spending what feels like more time in the past than the present. Meaningless relationships are explained, pointless clues are left behind and brought up again and again, and by the end of the "first version" of the book, you are completely unsatisfied, as every single "lead" in the case is left cold.
With the following "afterword", the entire mystery is all very conveniently solved and wrapped up within a couple of chapters, or what amounts to about the last 10% of the book. And to boot, one of the biggest and most intriguing clues through the entire mystery is simply dropped here and never spoken about again. Absolutely infuriating bait-and-switch.
It's as if the story was written as an exercise in first-person nostalgic prose, and for that I have to give credit, as everything certainly felt natural and never really awkward. But the plot is simply frustrating and ending extremely unsatisfying.
If one wants to emulate Stephen King, writing terrible endings is probably where I would stop.
