"A world-class whodunit."—Stephen King

“An extremely successful high-wire act, balancing between dark comedy and darker thrills.”—Alex Michaelides, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Laugh-out-loud funny, thrilling and twisty...”—Liane Moriarty, #1 New York Times bestselling author

"A lot of thrillers these days use the murder podcast as a plot device. This production simulates one better than any audiobook I’ve listened to, to an often hilarious effect. Also, January LaVoy expertly voices one of Lucy’s funniest tics: imagining how she would murder nearly every person with whom she comes in contact."—Vulture

"Narrator January LaVoy is a treat to listen to, as she gives Lucy the sardonic tone she needs as she grapples with life. LaVoy is also a genius in the way she gives life to Lucy's inner voice—a psychological shoulder demon who wants to solve every issue with ... "let's kill him."—The Berkshire Eagle

"Narrator LaVoy absolutely shines as the broken yet charmingly cheeky heroine. Her tale is organically intermixed with podcast excerpts delivered in honeyed and wry tones by Will Damron, each bookended by delightful 'podcasty' melodies."—Booklist

What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn't matter?

After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast "Listen for the Lie," and its too-good looking host Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvy’s murder for the show’s second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friend’s murder, even if she is the one that did it.

The truth is out there, if we just listen.

Kritikerstimmen

Listen for the Lie is a page-turner from the first sentence to the very last. In addition to being a world-class whodunit, full of carefully doled-out twists, Lucy is a terrific character, feisty and funny and, it turns out, brave as hell. It’s great fun. Readers will rip through this one.”—Stephen King

“Original and deliciously dark with a wicked sense of humor. An addictive page-turner that will keep you guessing until the end.”—Alice Feeney, New York Times bestselling author

“A singular voice that explodes off the page, Amy Tintera's writing flashes with sharp comebacks and pointed commentary as she expertly knits her web of secrets and small town lies. Hands down the most fun I've had reading about murder.”—Chandler Baker, New York Times bestselling author of The Husbands

Interesting story, mid voice actors

I didn’t really click with the protagonist - she wasn’t very likeable or interesting imo. But I liked the stöbern enough to listen to it during housework or driving. But one thing reaaally bugged me - when the male VO was up, the female voices were done by women, which was fine, but when the female VO was up she also did the male voices and it wasn’t done very well.. maybe it’s because one is the podcast and the other the „personal“ experience but I found it weird.

Couldn’t stop listening

I’m not a fan of podcasts or true crime, which is why it surprised me even more how much I liked this book!
The narrators were great (though to be honest I did listen at 1.3x speed) and the story had me guessing at every turn!

Funny, modern and dark

I enjoyed the format a lot and always was extremely excited to hear the Podcast excerpts. I loved following Lucy's Storyline since her voice is extremely entertaining. She has every reason to pity herself, however she resorts to dark humour, which makes it always fun to hear more. Not saying that's the way to deal with things, it sure isn't, as she knows herself.

The only slight thing I wasn't happy with was the "voice" that kept repeating "Let's kill". Not the repetition itself (the twist was great) but the annoying way it was said.

Also I loved the societal criticism that was always present about likability and how (female) victims are expected to act. Highly recommended.

Good mystery for in-between books

I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense that this book had to offer. It keeps chasing you into every red herring imagineable, and the final conclusion is satisfying.
The voice acting decisions were mildly irritating to me. While the female voice actor came up with several "voices" for other characters in her part of the narration, the male voice actor always had other voice actors accompanying him in his sections.
Even the part where they both overlap - if it was from the female perspective, she made up his voice, even though they could have just had the male voice actor speak those lines, too? Like I said, that was so irritating to me.

Listen for the stupidity

This was… stupid. I don’t mind suspending disbelief occasionally, but there’s a limit to how many implausible twists and turns I’m willing to accept.

My main issue with this book is its very premise: Two amateur sleuths join forces to solve an old crime. And even though the case is long cold, even though they have absolutely no experience with investigative work and no authority whatsoever, everybody and their grandmother fall over themselves to answer all their (mostly indiscrete) questions and tell them all kinds of secrets – not only their own, but also their neighbours’, friends’ and family’s. Never mind that they live in a small town where everybody knows everybody else (and where apparently everybody sleeps or used to sleep with everybody else - what's up with that?!). Never mind that one of the amateurs is a podcast presenter (ugh... give me strength!) and predictably spreads those secrets all over the internet. Of course they’re all eager to spill the beans to those two - who wouldn't be?! And how lucky they all remember things that happened years ago in such great detail! Shortly after the crime, when evidence, traces and memories were still fresh, the police was too stupid to find the culprit and never solved the crime. But lo and behold, years later our two top investigators manage what the police could not. Yeah, right.

The story is told alternately by its two main characters: The guy with the podcast and the woman the police (and the good people of her hometown) suspected of the murder. I hated both equally. I don’t blame the narrators (their performance was ok-ish), but the writer who created these characters.

The book has a an excellent 4+ rating on Goodreads, which I find astonishing. Well, reading tastes vary, so if you don't mind an exceptionally ridiculous plot - go for it.
