The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans. The second book of this excellent series about AIs and constructed beings, this one adds ART as murderbot's partner. ART is an AI running a ship, which brings up reminiscence of HAL, of 2001 fame. But where HAL was made all too human, Martha Wells manages to keep ART firmly artificial, making an even more interesting character. And Kevin Free does, once again, a perfect job of bringing these two brilliant artificial characters to life.
