very stronge first half
I feels like the author really acomplished what they were aiming for. It is a rather small setting for a fantasy novel of that length, just one city, but the setting fits the narrative. In my opinion it found a great balance between working with the historical context and the actual story. Sadly it lost a little bit of its innovation in the second half.
The narrator did a good job, but it seems like somethings parts of a sentence are from a different take or something because the sounds shifts noticeable.
Overall I would recommend the book to everyone who likes military fantasy.

impressive speaker, condensed look at the dissolution of an empire
like how the matters of empire are investigated within one city and not too many different characters, the tapestry is just as rich.
made me want to learn more about the history that inspired this
the character relationships could have been looked at more deeply, I felt like I was always just getting glimpses
there seemed to be always an invisible player lurking outside the view, and I think that it's a strength of the book. Because the characters in a situation like this are a lot less powerful than they want to be -- made it much more realistic.
