Damn Good Book

The speaker did a really great job! I love the way i can discern between the characters just by the way she is speaking. And the author is amazing too! If you search for a damn good story with breathtaking fights, an absurd government conspiracy, where the love triangle is solved in the most logical way (poly) then you've come to the right place!

Must-Read!

Fantastic book, fantastic narrator.
The epilogue is killing me!!! I need a sequel! q.q
I can fully recommend the book to everyone who isn't affected by the amazing content warnings at the beginning of the book! (This needs to become a standart!)

amazing

I have been waiting for this since I stumbled upon Xiran Jay Zhao on YouTube and it did not disappoint. such a fierce protagonist, fantastical story and breaking of gender and relationship norms. I couldn't stop listening to it and now I am sad it's over.

cool Sci-Fi+ feminist MC+ Chinese cultural aspects

First of all, I really liked this book and I would highly recommend it to everyone who likes cool action Sci-Fi storys + a strong feminist main character in an anti-feminist world + Hunger Games vibes.

I know it's not historical accurate, but the Chinese cultural aspects were very interesting, because it's really different from the cultures I know (for example their 5 elements, Ying and Yang or the behaviors and cruel rules they had to follow).

The writing style is beautiful with many thoughts of the main character. There's a lot of show never tell, that wasn't necessary to understand the aspects, but it's okay.

I love how head-strong Zetian is and that she's sometimes a bit morally grey or that she questions things.

There are many intelligent thoughts in this book (for example that betraying is just a matter of the point of view. It's just our perception of it).

Okay, there is a love triangle in this book. Actually that's a reason for me to not read a book, because I'm so sick of this toxic love triangle trope. BUT this one is not as usually (not only to create drama because the girl can't choose). Here it's an ACTUAL love triangle where everyone is in love with everyone. And it's finally HEALTHY. No jealousy at all. And I think it's such a great message about love in general.

I must say, I lost a bit interest in the middle of the book and even though I really liked the book and the feminist messages, I didn't fall in love with it. It was not like I couldn't stop listening or thought of it all the time. So I don't give 5 stars.

But nevertheless I highly recommend this book and I think it's important to read it and learn from it.

I am in love with this book

I truly did not know what to expect from this book. I had seen it being praised in my social media circles but there have been vastly overhyped books around there before so I was cautious but DAMN. I sped through this in less than a day. It kept me engaged from start to finish and I can't wait for the sequel. Reading the premise, one might wonder, how does this work? But it does. Mecha fights, sci-fi, and mythology and great characters intertwine for an amazing fast-paced story.

I usually struggle to like the protagonists of many stories but here, I loved her! Zetian is an amazing protagonist and it's so much fun to experience her world from her perspective. Everything is so well done in this book. The writing, the characterization, the worldbuilding, and the action. Everything just fits together. It's never overbearing or too much but just right.

I was amazed by the author's ability to make this world feel so real with so many little touches here and there and the ending had me worked up. It's perfect!

Great entertainment with the best speaker for an English novel I heard so far

This fast paced story with an excellent speaker provides great entertainment, if you don’t look for high literature and if you don’t mind quite repetitive passages on the female heroine’s frustration about the unfair treatment of women in the world of this story. Usually I listen to English language fantasy novels late evening in bed. I tend to fall asleep within half an hour - not with this story and definitely not with this speaker, which kept me awake until around 3 a.m. ! I have never perceived speakers making a big positive differentiation to a story - not with this one, however: Rong Fu definitely adds to the fast pace excitement of this story! A nice touch and unfortunately quite rare thing for translated stories from Chinese authors is that with Rong Fu a speaker was selected, who is capable of proper pronunciation of Chinese language derived names and phrases.

Binged it!

Great plot, finally a fresh take on a heroine, that actually has some debt and wasn't just "chosen" based on some random, passive features she never had to work for. I was honestly surprised and binged the whole thing in two days. Also, credit where credit's due, very good interpretation from Rong Fu, at least personally, I found her voice and intonation very pleasent and fitting the story.

I really like it!

I really like that this book aims to go against sexism without being part of that branch of feminism that tries to fight sexism against women by being sexist towards men. The book doesn't treat men as the "enemy" or present them as inately bad people while still portraying the hardships the title character has to struggle through because of sexism. Two of the main characters are boys, they are nonetheless decent people who do their best.

I'm hoping for a sequel where Zetian realizes that actually a hexagon is strongogon. ^^

hat Spaß gemacht

es war eine schöne Geschichte mit leichten schwächen. es ist angenehm modern aber reproduziert leider manchmal den Sexismus gegen den es sich wendet.
bi und polyamore Darstellung fand ich gut
