Über diesen Titel

When the task is a killing, be quick and make sure of it.

Torment is an indulgence.

Save it for only the most deserving.

Born into the troubled kingdom of Albermaine, Alwyn Scribe is raised as an outlaw. Quick of wit and deft with a blade, Alwyn is content with the freedom of the woods and the comradeship of his fellow thieves. But an act of betrayal sets him on a new path - one of blood and vengeance, which eventually leads him to a soldier's life in the king's army.

Fighting under the command of Lady Evadine Courlain, a noblewoman beset by visions of a demonic apocalypse, Alwyn must survive war and the deadly intrigues of the nobility if he hopes to claim his vengeance. But as dark forces, both human and arcane, gather to oppose Evadine's rise, Alwyn faces a choice: can he be a warrior, or will he always be an outlaw?

The Pariah begins a dark and bloody new fantasy epic from New York Times best-selling author Anthony Ryan, whose books have sold more than a million copies worldwide.

Interesting and engaging, with unsatisfying finish

Be aware: discription is not the premise, but the plot summary.

At times this seemed to not know where it wanted to go. Good parts mixed with few bad parts come just a bit short of a great story. Some sequel bait. Some flat characters, some not fleshed out enough. Suffers badly from the 'it was always meant to happen this way' trope,.. and could have easily been avoided.

Another perfect story….

…. From one of my most favourite authors. Anthony Ryan once again didn’t fail and wrote another perfect book. And here it is supported by an excellent reader, who manages to bring the characters to life. I wish all audiobooks were as perfect as this one

Great Book with very few flaws

My first book from this Author and I enjoyed it a lot. It has a strong story, enjoyable characters and villains. The narator is very good. There is a good amount of philosophy as well as humor.Combat is good, though strategy and tactics in the main battles are... sub par and sometimes downright stupid. And there is a time period in which the MC learns A LOT. Almost impossibly much. Other than these two points I have no complaints, and I am a very critical reader.

Solid Book, with weaknesses

The book starts off like a solid 5-star read. Very well-written. Morally grey, believable characters, good attention to detail. You can vividly imagine everything in your mind's eye. Then, about a fifth of the way through, the book suddenly drops to around 3 stars. It becomes boring. It feels like it was written by a different author, or by the same author with much less enthusiasm. It then slowly climbs back up to 4 stars and thankfully ends up at 5 stars again.

The book follows the life of a young man who experiences various episodes in different societies. First as an outlaw, then as a soldier, then in a sort of monastery, then in a mine, then in a religious circle, then in a mercenary group. The actual backstory unfolds only in the final act. For my taste, that could have come a bit earlier. Especially the episodes in the "monastery" and the mine could have been shortened by 80-100 pages.

Overall, though: A good book with many highlights, but all in all "only" 4 stars.

I didn't see this coming

The story is gripping and the author excels at describing situations. I won't recount whats happening in the story, since others have already done that. But the charme of it comes from the way it's written. The main character is an outlaw and we follow him throughout the story. It's written from the first person perspective which for me took some getting used to. But in this way we get an outlaw's outlook on the nobility and the church with a lot of sarcasm and a keen I to look through lies and bullshit and a clever head ob his shoulders to navigate through it all with more or less sucess.

But after finishing all three volumes what is most compelling is, that you get no clichee storyline. For me it was the story with the most surprising plot developments. And have I mentioned the very well written characters that you learn to love, hate and understand?

I can definitely recommend it!
