When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, it's up to six college students and their experimental physics project to prevent the end of civilization.
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away.
Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet. The team has just hours to get as many people as possible across to Outland before a lethal cloud of ash overwhelms them.
Nothing has prepared the refugees for what they find - a world of few resources and unprecedented dangers. Somehow, they must learn to survive, because Outland may not just be a safe haven - it could be their new home.

Die Story ist interessant, aber platter als die anderen Bücher des Autors. Den Effekt, dass es wirklich logisch ist und mal so sein könnte, wie beschrieben, hatte ich hier nicht.
Dennoch empfehlenswert, wenn man eine spannende Story hören möchte, die mit parallelen Welten und dem Ausbruch eines Supervulkans zu tun hat.

I truly like his writing and so far have heard every book several times.
This one is easy going, nice to read BUT I question the story to come in the sequels.
Besides his typical knack on the scientific side this story does have the focus on the classical social problems of people, who are in danger and under extreme stress.
This is a bit like "The Walking Dead"
After 5 episodes the zombies are no thread anymore but stuff in the background and the relations of and between the different protagonists and the typical social problems.
"Do not tell everyone the truly important parts, keep the misunderstanding at a maximum and hence wrong decision based on prejudice"
Well.. a nice story but not his best.
Ray Porter, man, Ray Porter is always the entertaining reader, very professional.
But also HE reaches his bounds.
So people in this story sound like the people in "The Fold".
A 50ish black Professor becomes a 30 year old doctorate.
This is confusing for someone like me who has an excellent memory on sounds and stories and people
Finaly:
Nice stroy but not his best.
Fun to hear but the sequels might not be so much fun.
We will see, I am eager to read the next sequel, just to find myself wrong :)

This book is a nicely resarchd as the other books nice to follow and smirk as a scientist and not to difficult for a non scientist.
However the story ends too quick and is general does not really built up any anticipation...
It's really ok and worth the credit, but nothing special...
