Inhaltsangabe

This comprehensive series of 84 lectures features three award-winning historians sharing their insights into this nation's past - from the European settlement and the Revolutionary War through the Civil War, 19th-century industrialization, two world wars, and the present day.

While American history spans not much more than two centuries, it is filled with a wealth of leaders, wars, movements, inventions, and ideas - each of which contributed in its own unique way to America's transformation from 13 disparate colonies on the east coast of North America into a global superpower.

These lectures give you the opportunity to grasp the different aspects of our past that combine to make us distinctly American, and to gain the knowledge so essential to recognizing not only what makes this country such a noteworthy part of world history, but the varying degrees to which it has lived up to its ideals.

The lectures chart the five predominant themes that run throughout the chronicle of U.S. history:

  • The American passion for freedom-including religious, political, and economic freedom.
  • The pursuit of education, which has been the quintessential way for Americans to invent (and reinvent) themselves.
  • The unquestioned faith in the value of popular government.
  • The willingness of Americans to experiment with and adapt to new environments and situations.
  • The belief that the United States is a "city on the hill," a country the likes of which the world has never seen before.

Placing familiar historical events in the context of these overarching themes will help you see American history less as a series of separate events and more as a mosaic in which everything is interconnected.

2.5 courses for the price of one

With 3 lecturers you get essentially 3 courses.
- Prof. Guelzo describes American history from the time of Christopher Columbus till the dawn of the Cicil War (36 lectures)
- Prof. Gallagher part is a short version of his course about the American Civil War (12 lectures)
- Prof. Allitt takes us to the turn of 21st century (36 lectures)
I personally knew least about the era treated by Prof. Guelzo so this was for me the most interesting one. A strange thing was hearing Prof. Abbitt praise of Americas democratic institions just today (Nov. 11 in 2020) with an incumbent president who is testing these institions to the limit.

A wonderful and comprehensive journey

I found the overall extension of the course very appropriate for the subject. It covers the full span of US history, ending up in recent days around 9/11.
I hugely appreciated Prof Guelzo vivid narration, full of details and dramatic narrative visualization of characters and situations. That part of the course is the one I enjoyed the most.
In the last section, the subjects are certainly very interesting being close to our times; in my view, there are margins of improvements in that part to what concerns some judgmental statements which are quite debatable and appear not substantiated.

American history by American Professors

it's a good book on American history.
however, it's biased.
it offered me the opportunity to learn a lot.
on the other side, there is a lot that's missing.
it's an American history that will bring you FACTS.
You will not learn, how to ask questions.
What are the consequences of American quest for Global hegemony?
it's all about the American model.
as we know today, there are many questions about this American model of WAR and CONQUEST.
the book talks about some Indian tribes, as they were third parties in the wars of the settlers against the Indians.
a chapter on the wars for the extinction of the Indian tribes is missing.
as I said, there is a lot to learn from this book.
on the other side, there is a lot that we are missing.
the Professors have put their accent on American virtues, such as making money and being successful.
we are missing the values of brotherhood, friendship and freedom.
