Über diesen Titel
The Roman Republic is one of the most breathtaking civilizations in world history. Between roughly 500 BCE to the turn of the millennium, a modest city-state developed an innovative system of government and expanded into far-flung territories across Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. This powerful civilization inspired America's founding fathers, gifted us a blueprint for amazing engineering innovations, left a vital trove of myths, and has inspired the human imagination for 2,000 years.
How did Rome become so powerful? This mystery has vexed historians from the ancient Greek writer Polybius to 21st century scholars. Today, removed as we are from the Roman Republic, historians also wonder what it was like to be a Roman citizen in that amazing era. Beyond the familiar names of Romulus, Caesar, Octavian, Brutus, and Mark Antony, what was life like for the ordinary people? And what did the conquered peoples think of this world power?

Great to keep the mind busy during boring chores
First, as a non native speaker, I was grateful for the exact pronunciation and slow pace of the reading.
Secondly, I had some revelations thanks to this lecture. Most stories rang a bell from my schooldays, but suddenly made sense in the context.

mediocre
The most interesting thing I've learned here was how early Roman society functioned and how it was comprised- e.g. the rights of womens and slaves...
The "history" and everything else just misses the point. I don't like outdated history "narratives", who start with the remark that the founding myths are just a mere fairytale, but then lay them out in detail while leaving out the real history - how Rome came into beeing!!! From there it's just a series of dates and battles.
A truly good history would start with a geographical overview of Italy and the Mediterranean- where the strategic poits like passes are, where the fertil plains are an so on, because geography dictates how ancient societies were shaped and which ones were prone to gain dominance. (This very day Europe is covered with highways and now one can imagine how it was in the old ages). Then this book would go on and discribe the inhabitants of ancient Italy and how the came into beeing, what languages were spoken there and what's the difference between Latin and the related, surrounding languages (and the non related as well)
And then it would focus on Rome and talk- for instance- how it came into beeing, what factors caused it to grow to dominante its neighbours- eg in military or diplomacy!!!
