Über diesen Titel
From the author of My Oxford Year, Julia Whelan’s uplifting novel tells the story of a former actress turned successful audiobook narrator—who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident—and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel.
For Sewanee Chester, being an audiobook narrator is a long way from her old dreams, but the days of being a star on film sets are long behind her. She’s found success and satisfaction from the inside of a sound booth and it allows her to care for her beloved, ailing grandmother. When she arrives in Las Vegas last-minute for a book convention, Sewanee unexpectedly spends a whirlwind night with a charming stranger.
On her return home, Sewanee discovers one of the world’s most beloved romance novelists wanted her to perform her last book—with Brock McNight, the industry’s hottest, most secretive voice. Sewanee doesn’t buy what romance novels are selling—not after her own dreams were tragically cut short—and she stopped narrating them years ago. But her admiration of the late author, and the opportunity to get her grandmother more help, makes her decision for her.
As Sewanee begins work on the book, resurrecting her old romance pseudonym, she and Brock forge a real connection, hidden behind the comfort of anonymity. Soon, she is dreaming again, but secrets are revealed, and the realities of life come crashing down around her once more.
If she can learn to risk everything for desires she has long buried, she will discover a world of intimacy and acceptance she never believed would be hers.

Great voices
I love the performance. The banter between the characters were great. But there were some points I thought the story was a bit off. All in all enjoyed it

She's a genius
From her first syllable in The Secret Life of Addie LaRue, I've fallen in love with Julia's voice. Turns out she's as great a writer as she's a narrator.
One question though: who's narrating the male character? ;)

loved it!
what a wonderful book. I am a huge fan of Julia Whelan's work, her voice, her performance on audio books. and to have her narrating this, her own novel, was just brilliant. such a terrific cast of characters, entirely "real" and multi-dimensional. the bantering, the innuendos, modern-day screwball. the glimpses of the industry, the behind-the-scenes setting. I do thoroughly enjoyed it, I'm probably going to miss nick & swanee.

Phenomenal
"It became the embodiment of all the hope for the future I wanted to have but often found I couldn't muster.
The urging to take the risk. To trust the outcome. An outcome whatever it may be, is at least the result of action, instead of inaction."
A wonderful story I want to believe in. A story that sweetend my days and my soul.
Thank you for writing.

Hail Queen Julia
In my books, Julia Whelan can do no wrong. It was an interesting story with plenty of tension and romance. All characters were well developed and I loved each one!

So good
I love when authors narrate their own books, this was so enjoyable. This book is one of these perfectly detailed life stories with love in them. All the emotions!

Good writing, terrible representation and a flailing plot.
2.5 stars: Julia Whelan’s storytelling is wonderful and there are a few lovely quotes to treasure in “Thank you for listening.”
The plot starts with a bang! The first quarter seems like a fantastic setup and the book was on track for a 4 - 4.5 star rating. However, after the 25% mark, the plot deteriorates into a mess and teeters our into nothingness. I considered not finishing it, but stuck with it to write a fair review.
The worst aspect was the representation of the main character’s struggles. The portrayal of the accident and its (emotional) aftermath is lacking depth and realism. In fact, the portrayal might be considered offensive to someone who’d really suffered from such an accident and consequences. The main character’s reaction, and the reactions of the people close to her, are deeply inappropriate to the situation. They might have been appropriate to a far more MINOR accident with MINOR consequences. As it is, the insensitive comments and accusations (that the main character should just “finally” deal with it and get over it, move on in her career, is holding herself back etc.) are sickening.
Similarly, ALL of the characters are insensitive to the current difficulties and bad news in the main character’s life. They seem to have ZERO sense of tact. I wish they’d had their priorities straight. The romance feels like the least urgent and dramatic plot thread of all. The family subplots are far more loaded. The highest potential was seen in the friendship between Swan and A - love, history, tragedy and envy could have collided spectacularly. And yet — nothing. The friendship is absent for most of the book and literally “pops up” every now and then.
Sadly, the potential for a 4 - 4.5 star book was squandered. Without the writing and the good quotes it would have been rated very low. I’m willing to go up to 2.5 stars for the writing.

Promising beginning, but went downhill fast
"Thank you for listening" started of strong! I liked the humor, the chemistry between the main characters, the witty banter, etc.
But as the story progressed, it went downhill fast: the main characters became more and more unlikeable, the romance forced, the chemistry completely gone. There were way too many side stories that honestly just draged the story out - there were so many scenes where I was like: why is this even in the book? How is this at all relevant to the story? It feels like the author tried so hard to write complex characters that, ultimately, she got so lost in the complexities and details until nothing of substance was left: no story arc, no real beginning or end, no romance. All the storylines etc. came to nothing - like an air mattress, that is slowly deflating. In the end I just didn't care anymore and was just annoyed - Seawannee, a narcissistic Mary Sue, who found her Gary Stu. Ugh. I kept waiting for something to happen, but nothing outside of complete clichés and Hallmark Card wisdom did. I just wanted the story to end and it left me frustrated and disappointed, especially because it had so much potential in the beginning that simply evaporated.
