Die eigentlich guten Ideen gehen sind leider zu vorhersehbar. Die Charakterentwicklung des Captains ist zu schwach. Die ewigen Unsicherheiten einer jungen Erwachsenen stören mit der Zeit

...but so exhausting to get through it to the end.. And the reason is pretty simple. the "damsel in distress" factor is just too high for me. It has been pretty heavy in the previous books, which is kind of understandable. Hazel is a village girl, farming chickens after all. But for the story's sake, please let her come to terms with the situation and step up to actually be the captain's daughter. There is a lot of weight put on the fact that she is descendant of the captain, just use that as an excuse for her to become a bit more badass than would maybe be realistic. But instead she is still stumbling along paths laid out for her by AIs, there is no hint of a command structure in combat (for example decisions in combat are questioned and discussed while in combat) and when something bad happens she completely loses her head (when someone is injured her first instinct is to run to them and cry over their wounds although she is no help whatsoever while she could be more useful by just keep doing what she is supposed to.. like shooting aliens..)
I get that the humans in the arkship are basically just medieval villagers, but come on.. it takes a lot of fun out of the story at least for me..

The second big problem I had with this book is, that the story gives her A LOT of chances to be a damsel in distress. There is hardly any point in the book where a plan actually works. Instead the "heroes" just keep reacting and stumbling along some sort of improvisation courtesy of some AI. This got to a point that the story got completely predictable. There were hardly any surprising turns and encounters up to and including the final encounter which I anticipated literally chapters in advance. And even that was a damsel in distress moment....

I see a bit of a trend here with modern Scifi books where heroes just stumble from encounter to encounter with almost no rest and no working or lasting plan, just an overall idea of what to do and the rest is improvisation because the bad guys are on top of them basically at all times whether it is logical or not. That makes stories exhausting, predictable and also unbelievable from time to time.
To make a comparison with another Hamilton story that I absolutely enjoyed: in the Salvation Sequence the plan of the Saints was solid, they even got the chance to execute it and there was plenty of chill time with room for actual storytelling and character development. I missed that in this book and frankly also a bit in the two previous ones.

But in the end the Arkship trilogy was a good story overall. The concept itself is great and with a slightly different execution in book 3 it could have been another "on repeat candidate" for me. But as it is I enjoyed the start of this journey and I also really liked the way it ends in the final chapters. It brings closure without lose ends and brought even a tear to my eye.

Elizabeth Klett does a very good job at bringing the story and its characters to life. maybe too good sometimes.. Hazels "Huh???" might haunt me 😅

Such a good story...
