In love, a willing learner

This story is absolutely a must. I can’t say it any different. I will listen to it again, and then again because I don’t think you can grasp the full meaning and intention of the book in just one setting. The Korean emotions and the history that is the frame for this family’s story is just as exciting as the fate of each of the characters. I feel like the book gave me a deeper understanding of why and how Korea and the situation with Japan is as it is right now and a deeper look into the, for Europeans, so well hidden thoughts of Korean culture and people.

Excellent fictional history novel

Pachinko is a great story, telling us about the fate of a Korean family in several generations. Not only do you learn about important historical events like the Korean occupation, world war 2 in Japan and the division of Korea from a personal point of view, you also get deeply involved with the characters.

The audio book is excellent, the voice actor fits perfectly and pronounces all languages (as far as I can tell) used in the book well.

There many types of loves but there one unconditional love for certain .. mothers love .

An engaging fiction about the very real struggle of a Korean family trying to survive Japanese colonization. Great and believable protagonists and exceptional reading performance.

Fantastic from beginning to end

The story draws you in and the speaker is just wonderful. I could not put this one down, I've binged it over the past two weeks and it brought me a lot of joy and feels. I can highly recommend it

Wunderbare Familiengeschichte

Dieses Hörbuch gehört zu den Perlen. Die Geschichte einer koreanischen Familie in Japan über mehrere Generationen hat mich tief berührt. Rassismus gibt es leider in jeder Gesellschaft. Und er beruht überall auf ungerechten und unberechtigten Vorurteilen. Trotz der vielen traurigen Ereignisse gibt die Geschichte auch viel Hoffnung. Unbedingt empfehlenswert!

more about the people than the history

This is one of the best books I read this year.
A broad range of stories and underlying emotions of each character and changes of perspectives through generations..
I really liked that the book is calmly written without hatefulness even it's a story about people from two countries with a conflicted history, yes, it's not about the history but people living in it.
So interesting and I opening.

Beautiful story of a family

There’s so much to unpack here, so much generational trauma and pain. The story is beautiful and told without “wasting” pages talking about nothing. Everything is precisely told, with just the right amount of empathy for the narrative to move the reader without making them spiral into depression, because some of these stories really are horrible.

Multi-generational family epos

This is a multi-generational family epos that kicks into motion when sixteen year old Sunja is groomed and persuaded by the much older Koh Hansu to have sex and eventually gets pregnant. The book spans over almost 80 years and pingpongs like a pachinko ball from Yeongdo in Korea to Osaka, Tokio and Nagano in Japan to New York City in the US. It’s a story about the power of money and men, the strength and endurance of women, and the survival of a Korean family living in Imperial Japan. And it is – as author Min Jin Lee says – a book about the lives of ordinary people. While I enjoyed reading about a side of history I rarely come into contact with, this was not my cup of tea: It’s written in a factual manner, retelling what happened rather than what characters felt. Throughout the book, there was an acute lack of anger, sadness and frustration that I thought these characters would feel, enduring what they endure. And towards the end, there were too many characters for me to care about any in particular. All in all, probably a good book, just not one I particularly liked.
