From the New York Times-bestselling author of Cutting for Stone comes a stunning and magisterial epic of love, faith, and medicine, set in Kerala, South India, following three generations of a family seeking the answers to a strange secret

“One of the best books I’ve read in my entire life. It’s epic. It’s transportive . . . It was unputdownable!”—Oprah Winfrey, OprahDaily.com

The Covenant of Water is the long-awaited new novel by Abraham Verghese, the author of the major word-of-mouth bestseller Cutting for Stone, which has sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States alone and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over two years.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning, the young girl—and future matriarch, known as Big Ammachi—will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss, her faith and love the only constants.

A shimmering evocation of a bygone India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the difficulties undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. It is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.

The empathy of a physician and writer turns a story about three generations of an Indian family afflicted with a hereditary disease in today’s Kerela into a fascinating colorful and emotional movie. The author voice makes this a 5 * performance.

I loved the accurate medical descriptions explained with so much empathy for the patients. This is how human-centered medicine should be!

A colorful and warmhearted family and medical history over 70 years starting in early 20th century India

This is an engrossing family saga, beautifully told and with so much to learn. Set in Kerala, South India in the early 1900s, it starts with a child bride getting ready to marry her 40 yr old widowed groom and look after his young son. What sounds like a depressing start turns into a different story where stereotypes are broken: the groom & his family is kind, the girl is treated well and becomes Big Amachie, the caring matriarch of the clan.

Central to the plot is “the condition” causing members in every generation of this family to fear water and eventually die by drowning. How this pans out and how this medical mystery is eventually solved is a key driver in the story.

I learnt so much about India and was particularly fascinated by the St Thomas Christians (tracing their origins to the “doubting Thomas”, one of Jesus’ original disciples). The medical explanations, British history and Indian independence were interesting too, but it’s the flowing story, vivid characters and gentle humor that grab your heart and don’t let you go.

I can particularly recommend the audiobook read by the author. Especially his special local Indian accent made it such an authentic experience. A wonderful treasure of a book that will stay with me!

Outstanding saga, beautifully told

I loved the characters, I laughed and cried with them. I heard sentences I stopped the car while driving, just to listen to them over and over again. So much meaning and wisdom in only a few words!
And what to say about the author’s ability to capture so many English accents, to speak for so many so heterogeneous characters, embedding us into so many minds, hearts and souls.
I know I will recall this book and what it made me feel for ever. Thank you, thank you. Thank you!

I have read/heard so many books in my life. Never a better one than this story.
