rich character portraits, amazing evocative writing. yes, I am fascinated with the fictional history of Westeros. the interview at the end with G. R. R. Martin is highly enjoyable. love it! & recommend it :)

epic storytelling

Ich habe mir das Hörbuch im Hinblick auf den Serienstart von "House of the Dragon" geholt, weil der Re-read vom Buch mir aktuell nicht ganz passt. Daher wusste ich natürlich, was auf mich zukommt und das hat mir ähnlich gefallen wie beim ersten lesen. Ich find das Konzept von fiktionalen Geschichtsbüchern generell spannend und besonders, wie George hier mit der Unzuverlässigkeit von Quellen arbeitet ist witzig... also so witzig wie das fiktionale Geschichtsbuch in Charakter geschrieben von einem alten Archmaester sein kann.

Entgegen dem, was eine andere Rezension hier behauptet ist das Hörbuch auch soweit ich das sehe komplett, beide enden mit dem Kapitel "The Lysene Spring and the End of Regency" ca 135 Jahre nach der Landung in Westeros. Ich nehme an da gab es ein Missverständnis, 300 years *before* heißt halt nicht, dass es alle 300 Jahre abdeckt, besonders weil Archmaester Gyldayn mehrere Bücher zu der Targaryen verfasst hat.

Simon Vance liest sehr angenehm und ich hoffe, dass er auch weitere Bücher übernimmt, sei es die Haupt-Asioaf-Serie oder eben diese Offshoots

Für die, die fiktionale Geschichte mögen perfekt.

I have to admit I was one of those people who just couldn't wait for season two of House of the Dragon and I have to admit, after reading/listening to the book, I am even more impressed by the show. There isn't much more here than a rough outline, no witty dialogues or interesting twists. It really does read like a fiction version of a good history book. For hardcore fans I can recommend this one, but only if you are able to imagine how much better the series will probably be

I especially liked the format of the book being written as a history book with differentiating accounts. It leaves a lot of space for your own headcanon of what really might have happened. It is very well read as well. Just be warned that there will be a deluge of names.
