Inhaltsangabe

'A fast-paced carnival of setbacks and skullduggery that reminds me of... me! Charming from the first twist to the last' Scott Lynch, author of THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA

The first in an extraordinary new fantasy epic, perfect for fans of Nicholas Eames and James Islington!

Lukan Gardova is a cardsharp, academy dropout, and - thanks to a duel that ended badly - the disgraced heir to an ancient noble house. His life consists of cheap wine, rigged card games and wondering how he might win back the life he threw away.

When Lukan discovers that his estranged father has been murdered in strange circumstances, he finds fresh purpose. Deprived of his chance to make amends for his mistakes, he vows to unravel the mystery behind his father's death.

His search for answers leads him to Saphrona, fabled city of merchant princes, where anything can be bought if one has the coin. Lukan only seeks the truth, but instead he finds danger and secrets in every shadow.

For in Saphrona, everything has a price - and the price of truth is the deadliest of all.

Fantastic characters, fast-paced plot

loved it- one of the best fantasy stories I have read/listened to in the last 5 years. On par with Locke Lamora, but with more laughs. Effortlessly charming. Wonderfully equal/diverse/feminist world-building that nonetheless never seemed strained. I loved Flea, and especially Flea and Lucan's banter. Go listen, you won't regret it!

Loved it

Great book - thanks, I needed that!

Loved the characters & writing style - ended up devouring this audiobook within 3 to 4 days. Some would describe the protagonist as annoying (which he is), I found it refreshing to have a different kind of character in the main role. Many intriguing side characters. Some things that realistically don't work out and others that halfway do due to the stubborn nature of the protagonist.
Only thing that didn't work for me / got boring / annoying at some point was in the middle to second half where people are not believing the protagonists story - too many times. It's the same pattern like 5 times in a row, this could be handled better. At least one of these could be left out and one or two could have been done differently (with the plot advancing in between making it unnecessary) so the same pattern doesn't appear that much. Apart from that nothing major in my eyes and I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book!

Really liked the narration as well, it's so important with audiobooks - make or break it. The story can be great, if it's not well-read however you can easily end up hating it. Mr. O'Connor has done a great job there, especially with the internal dialogues. Different voices for different kind of characters. Only criticism would be that one particular accent/way of speaking has been used for too many character, could be a bit more versatile there. But it's not a huge issue & could be rationalized by saying it's how people in this city talk.

At least according to audible this is his first/only book narrated so far - I hope you keep it up! Good narrators make a difference.

Looking forward to the second book!
