"There’s nothing there." The words may as well have been a death sentence to young Declan. Without mana, there could be no studying at the sky-piercing Pinnacle Towers, there could be no great monster hunts, and there could be no following in his father’s legendary footsteps.

But when a terrible accident forces him to flee, Declan learns the true nature of his mana. Just because it doesn’t resonate at any known frequency doesn’t mean it isn’t magic. First of all: I really enjoyed it.
The writing was a bit “fresh” and the interactions a bit constructed, but all in all an enjoyable read:
Bullies are bullies, but are humane and described with less Klischees afterwards as are a lot of other characters. The magic system is a lesson on radio frequency, the world in this book just background noise and the main char a foreseeable superforce of destruction and versatility.
Not a great book, but still definitely a good one and worth the time.

Apart from the theory behind the magic system that is explained in detail, the whole world and characters beside the protagonist don't feel very fleshed out. This makes for a rather light listening experience that is relatively easy to follow. You don't have to pay close attention all the time as the plot paces along. The story itself is decent and enjoyable.

In case you're wondering about the LGBT tag, it plays a miniscule role that basically comes down to a few sentences in the entire book.

Eine tolle Geschichte, man möchte immer wissen wir es weiter geht. Mit den Charakteren kann man sich auch gut einfühlen.
Das Konzept der Magie gefällt mir sehr gut. Auch das etwas technischere hat seinen Charme.

I liked the narrator. The story was very enjoyable. The magic system is very unique and gives the world a certain credence and immersion potential.

Also interesting characters. I already bought the sequel.

It sounded like a light, cozy magic story and the ideas are actually quite alright. The poem about the nothing mage ist great, I loved it! I also liked the speaker a lot. But as much as I tried, I couldn't bring myself to listen to more than half, because it was too boring. A lot of descriptions without letting us feel how the characters feel (more Tell than Show) and even though there is a lot of science-like information about magic, I wasn't able to understand what the macigians actually do to cast a spell. A lot of figures appear and disappear without having any meaning for the story line and at least until where I stopped, nothing much happens. The protagonist just hangs about studying. The cruelty towards animals wasn't my cup of tea either. Maybe it's simply not my kind of story. Maybe I gave up too soon and the second half is great. But I won't continue, it's not worth it.

i wrote this after all 3 books and the first one is not bad but then ste story degrades more and more to inner monologues of constant whining and self pity. the character evolves to a psychotic mass murder.

My expectations of listening to a catching story of mages, hero’s and friendship were definitely not fulfilled.
