Über diesen Titel

What secrets lie in Mr. Darcy’s past?

During a summer sojourn in Ramsgate, Elizabeth Bennet meets Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy—an irresistible, eminent, and seemingly unobtainable model of an ideal gentleman. Following a whirlwind romance with Mr. Darcy and a blossoming friendship with Georgiana Darcy, her life is forever altered.

When Darcy disappears under mysterious circumstances, the new Mrs. Darcy’s world is thrown into chaos. A friend of Darcy’s provides much-needed support as Elizabeth is confronted with rumours insinuating lewd explanations for his absence. Could any of them be true?

In this Pride and Prejudice variation, a Regency mystery romance, Elizabeth cannot be certain what to believe or whom to trust. She is determined to find out what befell Darcy, but will the truth break her heart?

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS STORY MENTIONS A PAST ASSAULT ON A YOUNG WOMAN THAT IS THWARTED BY A MAIN CHARACTER.

Story OK, Narrator could have done better

The Story was Ok, not always logic, but ok.
The Narrator could have Spoken a bit more distinguished. Elisabeth would have spoken with more poise and not like one of the lower class. I'm sorry, but there it is

The mysterious disappearance of Mr. Darcy

At her stay at the seaside town of Ramsgate Elizabeth encounters the haughty Mr Darcy and his amiable sister Georgiana. But first impressions are not always the right ones: their rocking start is followed by a whirlwind romance and soon Darcy and Elizabeth are wed.
But then Darcy mysteriously disappears, leaving Elizabeth with no clues about his whereabouts, throwing her in a turmoil of emotions and exposing her to the pressing questions of his family. Fortunately on the day of Darcy's disappearance an old friend of him arrived, proving to be of irreplaceable help for Elizabeth while she frantically searches for her husband.
Will she be able to find him unharmed? Are the rumours true that he disappeared because of another woman? And whom can she even trust in this trying time?

The story was very well written by the author Kelly Miller. I always enjoy her stories very much, this one was no exception. The mystery around Darcy's disappearance was very well written and cleverly constructed. Because Elizabeth tells the story from her point of view we always know exactly what Elizabeth knows and therefore have no chance to discover the solution before her. This keeps the story thrilling until the end and one always frantically searches with Elizabeth and hopes with her against every hope. But when all is revealed the resolution was believable and one understands what is going on concerning Darcy's disappearance.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth in this variation. They have a rocky start but it is nevertheless a love at first sight story between the two of them. I like that Darcy trusts her so much, that she is even allowed to continue his business and correspondence during his disappearance. They also share a loving relationship as a couple.

I also liked the relationship between Georgiana and Elizabeth very much. They do not know each other their entire lives but in the crisis they both behave as real sisters do. They console each other, they hope together and they are anxious for Darcy. I like their bond very much and that they endure everything together as real sisters do.

I was glad that, during Darcy's disappearance, Elizabeth discovers real friends who support her. It is palpable throughout the whole book, this feeling of friendship in difficult times.

The villain in this story is none of the "old favourites" but a totally new one. That is a good decision because this enables the author to have a believable reason for Darcy's disappearance, something that would have been surely more difficult to construct with the well-known characters of Pride and prejudice. Besides these real evil people there are also people who are not in favour of Elizabeth and who try to use Darcy's disappearance to their advantage. I am glad that they aren't successful in the end.

There are rather few of the well-known characters in this variation, it's mostly only about Darcy, Elizabeth and Georgina, and additionally about Darcy's friend who helps Elizabeth. There is not much page time for Elizabeth's and Darcy's other relatives but they are definitely not missed here because the story works without them 😉. The only exception are the Gardiners who are great supporters and an irreplaceable help to Elizabeth. I really like that they have a significant role in unraveling the mystery.

The story was very well narrated by Vicki-Jo Eva. I had not listened to her performance before but she was definitely perfect for the role. She was able to make me feel Elizabeth's anxiety and hopelessness as well as her hoping again and all the while frantically searching for a sign of her husband. I enjoyed her narration very much.

If you like to know more about Mr Darcy's mysterious disappearance and how Elizabeth feels about it you should definitely read this excellent book and listen to the audiobook.

I highly recommend it.

This book may not be for every reader, there are scenes beyond kissing in it and a past assault on a young woman is mentioned.

I received a free copy of the audiobook from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
