Über diesen Titel

Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Yet even after deciphering its hieroglyphs, and marveling at its scarabs, mummies, obelisks, and sphinxes, Egyptian civilization remains one of history's most mysterious, as "other" as it is extraordinary. This chronological survey presents the complete history of ancient Egypt's three great Kingdoms: the Old Kingdom, when the pyramids were built and Egypt became a nation under the supreme rule of the pharaoh and the rules of Egyptian art were established; the Middle Kingdom, when Egypt was a nation fighting to restore its greatness; and the New Kingdom, when all the names we know today-Hatshepsut, Tutankhamen, Ramses the Great, Cleopatra, and others-first appeared. Professor Brier's 48 lectures glisten with the kind of vivid anecdotes and human glimpses that make this ancient world breathe again.

"The fun of history is in the details," he notes. "Knowing that Ramses the Great was crippled by arthritis for the last decade of his long life makes us more sympathetic to the boastful monarch who fathered more than 100 children. If we understand what it was like to be a miner sent to the turquoise mines in the Sinai mountains in the summer, we will feel a kinship with our long-dead counterparts."

I’ve listened to many lectures, this is the first I’m writing a comment, just because it’s so very good. Enjoy.

Thank you Prof. Brier, you tell a captivating history and do NOT put the listener to sleep.

History in the best sense

... as much as I liked the speakers enthusiam, his repeated repetion of phrases to stress his statements is a bit tiring. And then there a two chapters in which the author discusses the truth of the Josephus and the Exodus stories from the Hebrew Bible which are just embarassingly biased, Professor Brier even admits, there is no archaelogical evidence to support these stories and still rumbles on. You can feel he wants them to be true. Not the scientific way!
But besides these two two points it was an awesome adventure to follow him through 3000 years of history. In the end you will notice the main "failure" of this this audio book is: It is much too short. 48 chapters sounds like a lot but 3000 years .....
The best features of this audio book are the "sidelines" - topics like religion and mythology, mummification, science and medicene, art an architecture.

A quite good overview, but ....

This was my first audiobook from The Great Courses, which I bought because it had many positive reviews. I was not particularly interested in Ancient Egypt but wanted to give it a try. However, my perspective has completely changed! The author is a brilliant lecturer, and I enjoyed every minute of this audiobook. I highly recommend it because Ancient Egypt is much deeper and more interesting than I had imagined from the very short sections dedicated to this topic during my school years.

get it! really worth it!

I loved the course so much that I will listen to it second time soon. I have never been a big fan of Egypt but now I am mesmerized by everything I learned thanks to this wonderful series of lectures. I should teach some ancient history in a small high school soon even though I am a qualified as literature and language teacher and now I have so much to share with students.

Highly enjoyable series of lectures. Perfect journey to the ancient Egypt.
