Über diesen Titel

Siege of Terra Book 3.

The outer defences have fallen, and the walls of the Imperial Palace await the Traitors. Perturabo is determined to tear down the mighty edifices his brother and bitter rival Rogal Dorn has built - but first he must take the Lion's Gate Spaceport, so that his heaviest weapons can land.

Listen to it because:

It's time for Rogal Dorn's defences get their real test - the attention of Perturabo and the Iron Warriors. The irresistible force meets the immovable object - and carnage ensues.

The story:

The war for the fate of mankind blazes on. Though the outer defences have fallen, the walls of the Palace itself remain inviolate as Rogal Dorn, the Praetorian of Terra himself, uses every known stratagem and ploy to keep Horus' vast armies at bay. In Perturabo, the Traitor siegebreaker, Dorn faces an adversary worthy of his skill. A terrible, grinding attrition ensues. The crucial battle for the Lion's Gate spaceport is at the heart of this conflict. With it in their possession, the Traitors can land their most devastating weapons on Terran soil. Dorn knows it must not fall. But with enemies attacking from within as well as without and the stirrings of the neverborn drawn to the slaughter, can the Imperial defenders possibly prevail?

So far my favorite Gav Thorpe book. Considering I returned the last, that isn’t saying much however.
The story keeps you interested. There are some great set pieces and interesting characters. It’s simply not as well written as what Abnett or Dembski-Bowden put forth so far.
Also, the decision to use contemporary accents for their corresponding regions in 30k is puzzling.
So far we had distinct accents for people from different planets, now people from Africa have African accents (and they sing work songs and have very distinct words that relate to 20th century Africa). I don’t know who made that decision but it takes you out of the story every time because it makes little sense, even in a science fantasy story like Warhammet 40k. Dame goes for one of our protagonists from the last and this novel, who has a very broad „asian“ accent.
Luckily these characters do bring some much needed human perspective into an otherwise very over the top story. Like the Tanith first in Gaunts Ghosts and the Remembrancers from the Horus Heresy, they are a lot more relatable than the primarchs or demons so the stakes feel a lot higher with them included.

Serviceable entry, dwarfed by its peers.

Definitely a must read to follow the events - but feels a bit disconnected within itself at times. Too many jumps from character to character and chapter to chapter

Good Book in the Series

I'm loving the siege of Terra series. Shining a light on many different legions, custodians, sisters of silence and normal guardsmen. Really great books.

Siege of Terra is great

One of my favourites.
I also liked the one form the Perspektive of the Tankcrew.

„For the Waemaster“ - sometimes hits differently

the absolutely unauthentic and forced African guardsmen POV is an absolute disgrace for a book in which otherwise doesn’t happen alot anyways.

Keeble‘s „African“ accent only adds further insult to injury

This is not an Africa slam, it just is completely ridiculous in a setting based in a hyper modernised Terra 30k years in the future.

At one point one of the characters mutters the „our ancestors were kings and queens“ line - I honestly couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

30 millennia in the future and Africans still live in tribes

I was very unhappy with the plot, as it does very little to further the story of the siege of Terra and overall seems like the author didn't have much of an idea of what story he wants to tell
We follow several Space Marine POV characters, whose actions don't influence the plot too much and who undergo almost no development. Like in other SoT books, we also follow around several conscripts as POV, although the one we see the most of is sacrificed to facilitate a twist that was predictable from a long time before. for some reason the book stops following most at it's characters at some point and just leaves their arc open, as if the author couldn't be bothered to tie everything up before the end of the book.
Then, there is an arc about Keeler that is completely unnecessary. my theory is that gw wanted to settle the debate on whether it is ok to use poxwalkers in 30k.
overall, very disappointing

Not a strong entry in the series

30 to 40 percent of the book talks about one single imperial army regiment while the rest pitifully tries to explain the fight for the lions gate space port and how the Imperial cult starts gaining followers.

It's the siege of terra. The most important event in Warhammer history and I have to listen to a random imperial regiment for 12 hours only for smth happening in the last 2 (and the following plotwist is way worse than anything I could have imagined. Unexpected Treachery is nothing that should exist this far into the Heresy and not on Terra) I have longed for epic heroics and sacrifices and last stands. Only to listen to a 12 hour take about a boringly written fight and a stupid plot twist. How is this the pinnacle of there Heresy. We have 9 primarchs but barely any gets screen time.

Just skip it. Nothing interesting happens here that won't be explained in Saturnine.

And Jonathan Peebles Afric Accent is just awful. There are some times where he switched to an comical Indian accent and I couldn't stop cringing

Just skip it
