A classic tale beautifully read

I tried. Really. I gave this audiobook serveral shots, because a friend told me, the story is worth it. I only made it 2/3 trough.

Cause is not the story itself, which is ok, but the narrator. Over the years I have listened to many, many audiobooks and never have I experienced an narrator who actively lessens the experience. His accentuation, pacing, his voices for the different characters. All these things miss the mark and distracted me from the story itself. At times I got really annoyed and couldn't believe this production got greenlit.

I'm sorry to stop the audiobook here. Fortunately I can switch to another language and hope, that the German translation and narrator are doing a better job.

Narrator is a catastrophe

This is an excelent reading of a great book! The story starts a bit slow, like most epic fantasy stories do, but the plot and the characters are well thought out and I found I couldn't stop listening. The reader of the audio book is a master of the art, the voices are unique and the accents of the different people distinct to the point where you can tell what part of the fictional Osten-Ard a new character is ment to come from!

It's one of the best audio-books I have ever listened too and I can only highly recommend!

Great reading of a great book!

Klassische Fantasy, vom übermütigen Jüngling, der sich langsam zum Helden mausert. Ich habe das Epos erstmals vor Jahren gelesen und nun nochmals als Hörbuch gehört. Ursprünglich war ich begeistert, aber nun bin ich eher ernüchtert. Die Geschichte ist vielschichtig aufgebaut, einfallsreich, oft auch mitreißend und mit sich entwickelnden, glaubwürdigen Charakteren besetzt. Leider ist sie aber an vielen Stellen auch unglaubwürdig im Detail. Sie entwickelt sich nicht stimmig aus selbst heraus, sondern wirkt eher konstruiert. Am schlimmsten ist, dass sich die Geschichte meist unglaublich zäh liest (bzw. hört). Ständig laufen beispielsweise verschiedene Leute zig Minuten lang durch Tunnel und immer wieder muss man die Beschreibung dazu über sich ergehen lassen. Stöhn! Natürlich muss eine Welt auch ausgeschmückt werden, sonst bleibt sie blutleer. Aber hier muss man endlose, sich wiederholende Beschreibungen und Reflexionen ertragen. Das Epos könnte 50 Stunden kürzer sein, ohne dass wesentlicher Inhalt fehlen würde und die Welt immer noch fantasieanregend beschrieben wäre. Tad Williams ist einfach ein ungebremster Schwafler. Alles in allem zerstören diese Defizite die eigentlich gute Geschicht.

Nach 1/3 der Geschichte und dem Bekanntwerden der Namen Charaktere Figuren nimmt die Geschichte Fahrt auf. Ich bin auf Teil 2 gespannt.

Teil 1 einer Serie die Lust auf mehr macht.
