Change of genre
While I liked the first few books of the series, this book lost its way in a multitude of romances (at least five), all of which were basically the same. The repetition was overwhelming and took up most of the book. Even the words describing the romantic actions were so similar that it became rather tedious. For example, I don't think I'd ever heard the phrase '...in a decadent rush...' before, but in this book, it was used about 15 times.
I appreciate the general idea and the values, and I understand that the freedom to love anyone is key to the story, but unfortunately, this theme was expressed in a very two-dimensional way. The loss of depth was compensated for by sheer volume, though.

The story could’ve been told in 1/3 of the time
I don’t mind the occasional love story but this was just too much. Eeeeevery character got his or her lover and the exact same “forbidden love story” in excruciating detail over and over. It came to the point that I started skipping whole chapters without even missing one single piece of the actual storyline. The actual storyline could’ve been told in 1/3 of the book.

The other ones were much better...
I really like this series, but I must say that I was very disappointed by this one. It feels like the story barely moves ahead, it's mostly about relationships and falling in love but the story does not actually come along very much in this book. It fills like a filler, like being half-heartedly entertained when the big show you came for is delayed. I am still going to continue with the next book in the series, because I am invested in this, but I do hope that the next one has some more meat to it. The only good thing was, as always, Julia Whelan. She did an amazing job with all the different characters, their emotions and the whole story in general.

Expected epic battle, received written pornography
This issue, even more than previous iterations, focuses on romantic entanglements and intimacy. If that’s what you’re looking for, give it a go. The story itself moves at a snails pace and is filled with a variety of characters that internally are all the same person.
