Über diesen Titel

Nate wants more to life than moving from town to town, hustling chess with his con-man grandfather or wagering pick-up games online. A new immersive game opens up the chance to bring in a steady paycheck. Maybe enough to convince his grandfather to stay straight. Little does he know how his actions will change his life.

A GameLit coming of age story.

I bought this audiobook after starting to read the excellent "Maid with Necromancy" by the same author. "The Crafting of Chess" is in many aspects a conventional LitRPG: the story is primarily about a young gamer, both about his experiences in some fully immersive massive multiplayer fantasy game, his real life, and the interactions between both. The book includes genre staples like fantasy races, stats, leveling, PVP situations etc. Further topics that are explored are the motivation of the developers of the game, people who move their life into the game, and moral questions about the treatment of NPCs . (The latter two topics become more important in "The rise of Chess".)

What differentiates "The Crafting of Chess" from other LitRPGs is that the main protagonist has no interest whatsoever to play the game in the way it is intended, but rather looks at is as a business opportunity. Hence, the protagonist is not interested in visiting dungeons and increasing fighting skills, but rather focusses on crafting and managing (business) relationships with NPCs.

A LitRPGs without dungeons, barely any monsters, and few fight scenes may not be for everyone, since it inverts the conventions of the genre. But I enjoyed it quite a bit.
