Inhaltsangabe

The story of Africa is the oldest and most event-filled chronicle of human activity on the planet. And in these 36 lectures, you'll explore this great historical drama, tracing the story of the Sub-Saharan region of the continent from the earliest evidence of human habitation to the latest challenges facing African nations in the 21st century.

By learning with these lectures, you'll finally be able to bust myths and correct potential misunderstandings about Africa. For example, in Africa, the word "tribe" is used in a neutral way to connote ethnic identity. Another example: Sub-Saharan Africa was not as isolated as is often suggested by references to the "lost" continent; in fact, an ancient Greek sailing guide from 2,000 years ago clearly shows that the East African coast was already connected commercially with areas to the north.

The primary focus of these eye-opening lectures is Sub-Saharan Africa, the region separated from North Africa by the harsh climate of the Sahara Desert and traditionally the part of the continent that has been the most mysterious and most misunderstood by Westerners. But by traveling on this exciting learning experience (one imbued with a pervasive spirit of charm and adventure), you'll finally be able to strengthen your understanding of this beautiful, multifaceted region.

Well explained - great lecturer

Having not much of an idea about African History, these lectures gave me a good overview. The PDF is a highlight as well. Good to follow along and the further readings suggested are notable to dive deeper into a topic. Thank you Professor

Very enjoyable but much wasted time

I quite enjoyed professor Vickery's lectures, but he has little time for the massive task of introducing the history of a whole continent and he spends too much time on caveats, excessive explanations of single points, and semantics. At times, I wished for a little less ethics and anthropology and a little more history.
That said, I did enjoy many of the examples he gave from literature, as well as his accounts of personal experiences, though once again, sometimes he was too lengthy with them.

The worst of this course:
The chapter on ancient Egypt. That did not have enough importance for the rest of the course, and what was important could have been said in ten or so sentences. I would much rather have learnt more about more pre-colonial sub-Saharan kingdom.

The best of this course:
What am I saying? There was loads. I suppose I especially enjoyed the chapters on specific history beginning with the end of colonial times. I'd say the Rwanda chapter was the most eye-opening to me. Also, the professor's sensibility. He has convinced me that his bias is the correct bias.

Altogether, that was fun, but I still have loads of questions. I guess I better get started on the recommended reading list.

Gets better as the course progressed.

Having just completed the course, I have to say that I learned a lot and my interest to read more have dramatically increased. For someone with little knowledge about Africa the selection of lectures gives a broad but we'll thought overview of the continent's history. I recommend listening to it.

As other reviewers have noted, the pace of the lectures is slow and the speaker's tone and use of catchphrases are something hard to fall in love with. This is true, but mostly in the first lectures. As the course progresses I got increasingly satisfied with each lecture and was very eager to hear the next. The speaker's analysis and inclusion of the background for each topic is also very wellcomed, expanding the content further than just retelling the history.
