Über diesen Titel
Celebrated actor, personality, and all-around nerd, Wil Wheaton updates his memoir of collected blog posts with all new material and annotations as he reexamines one of the most interesting lives in Hollywood and fandom--and now for the first time in audio, narrated by Wil himself, with an introduction written and read by Neil Gaiman!
From starring in Stand by Me to playing Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation to playing himself, in his second (third?) iconic role of Evil Wil Wheaton in The Big Bang Theory, to becoming a social media supernova, Wil Wheaton has charted a career course unlike anyone else, and has emerged as one of the most popular and well respected names in science fiction, fantasy and pop culture.
Back in 2001, Wil began blogging on wilwheaton.net. Believing himself to have fallen victim to the curse of the child actor, Wil felt relegated to the convention circuit, and didn’t expect many would want to read about his random experiences and personal philosophies.
Yet, much to his surprise, people were reading. He still blogs, and now has an enormous following on social media with well over 3 million followers.
In Still Just a Geek, Wil revisits his 2004 collection of blog posts, Just a Geek, filled with insightful and often laugh-out-loud annotated comments, additional later writings, and all new material written for this publication. The result is an incredibly raw and honest memoir, in which Wil opens up about his life, about falling in love, about coming to grips with his past work, choices, and family, and finding fulfillment in the new phases of his career. From his times on the Enterprise to his struggles with depression to his starting a family and finding his passion--writing--Wil Wheaton is someone whose life is both a cautionary tale and a story of finding one’s true purpose that should resonate with fans and aspiring artists alike.

Refreshing honesty
It is a book that really resonated with me on a personal level. Wheaton's candid discussion about mental illness struck a chord, as he fearlessly opens up about his struggles with anxiety and depression. His honesty is refreshing and reassuring, reminding us that it's okay to acknowledge our own challenges.
One of the most compelling aspects of Wheaton's memoir is his perspective on past behavior and societal norms. He rightly points out that constantly apologizing for how we talked or acted in the past can be both annoying and misplaced. It's true that our language and behavior evolve over time, and what was considered normal or acceptable then might not align with today's standards.
Wheaton's reflections made me realize that we can't rewrite history or apologize for norms that were valid in their time. The way we spoke or behaved years ago was shaped by the cultural context of that era. Instead of constantly apologizing, Wheaton suggests focusing on personal growth and contributing positively to ongoing societal evolution.
Through his journey, Wheaton underscores the importance of embracing change and striving for a better future while respecting our past selves. This resonated deeply with me, as it's a reminder that growth and evolution are constant processes.
"Still Just a Geek" is not just a memoir about a Hollywood star—it's a testament to resilience, self-acceptance, and the courage to confront personal demons. Wheaton's narrative is relatable and inspiring, making this book a valuable read for anyone navigating their own journey of self-discovery and growth amidst the ever-changing landscape of life.
I started watching TNG with my daughter and she loves the shows where Wil has a role. In fact I need to turn on specially those episodes. She is inspired by the endless possibilities of „you work hard“ and being open and not afraid to behave against the norm and you can accomplish anything. I think a new geek is born in her. :-)
