This author is as American as can be
Pretty much the history of civilisations the American power-elite wants you to believe.
Still informative, though.

Great book
I’m going to order the first volume also. I think this book will change the way I understand the interplay and connections between state, democracy, rule of law or rule by law and the minute and important differences between the states and democracies of the world. For me it’s a lot of new information to take in and wrap my head around.

great work
great audio book, well read, great information. loved it. good understanding of modern day government. local government evolution, bureaucracies, interest groups. will read volume one!

Causation gone wild
This book was a continuation of my journey into sociology & polical science. I selected an author who is or at least was associated with the US neoconservative movement. A good way to temper my own confirmation bias after the lecture of more liberal views of the world.
This "opus magnum" covers a wide historical span and in spite of the sometimes repeated episodes is definitely a demonstration of the extensive knowledge of the author. The book however emanates the author's sympathy for on the one side Chinese tradition (and their claimed invention of a professional State) and on the other side a laudatio over the qualities of the virtues of the societal elites (to whom he certainly feels associated). The narration is a collection of cherrypicked stories that support these sympathies, worse: effects are axiomatically linked to the author's "right" causes. Like many of this claims also In his outspoken sympathy for Confusianist tradition, I would have seen more of a Plato's Republic ( were - by the way - both historical authors are roughly contemporaries).
In spite of this harsh critique, the book remains an interesting historical overview of politics, certainly not devoid of insights into the mindset of the inner circle of power of the USA. The major thought that I will take from this book is that one should not be surprised when reality goes wild when in the written excerpts of the men behind the scenes of power causation can take such extreme shortcuts.
