We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents.

I found Anne Applebaum's thesis and framing to be compelling. Her narration was also excellent - unusually so for an author narrating their own book. The only disappointment was that the outlook is grim. I do think that this is realistic, so it's important to portray accurately, as the author has done. However she did promise in the intro that she would finish with a guide to how liberal democraties could win against the threat of Autocracy, Inc. Sadly, in truth, the end of book only offered the flimsiest, most self-delusional pretense of this. The measures she proposes have already been shown to not work, or not be enough. I hope that we the free world will come up with better ideas, that work, before it's too late.
