The great Whitman was a humanist. His writing bridged the gap between transcendentalism and realism. Whitman defined what it means to be a citizen of America in concrete and mythical terms. Additionally, a good portion of this text is devoted to examining and rebutting negative critiques of Whitman’s work by British critics.
