Inhaltsangabe

Thor, Odin, Loki, Freyja, the Valkyries, Valhalla, Ragnarok — many of the places we encounter these and other names, places, and events from Norse mythology in daily life and pop culture are connected to the medieval sources in name only.

Join Jackson Crawford, a translator of Old Norse, for a rousing introduction to the original stories, characters, and themes of Norse mythology in these 24 lectures. Packed with gods, anti-gods, magical figures, human heroes, religious practices, and literary devices, this course lays bare the reasons for our enduring fascination with these undeniably dramatic tales. It also connects the dots to Icelandic sagas of human heroes and to the culture and worldview of the Viking peoples.

You’ll spend time in the company of an incredible pantheon of characters, including Thor, who wasn’t necessarily the god of thunder we think of him as, and Freyja, commander of the Valkyries (more a job with special perks than a species of creatures). You’ll also enjoy spirited retellings of stories where the first members of humankind are molded by the gods from two pieces of driftwood; Odin travels to Hel to dig up a dead witch and interrogate her about what his son’s premonitions of his own death means; and multiple generations of a marshy district in Iceland must deal with the ravages of an “again-walker” (akin to a zombie).

With his expertise, Dr. Crawford will deepen your acquaintance with these sources, and leave you with plenty to remember in the eerie tales and timeless wisdom of the Norse gods and heroes.

The Odin of the Rocky Mountains

I have enjoyed Crawford's videos for quite some time now, so I was thrilled when I saw this lecture available on Audible. He has a unique and sober way of communicating about Norse culture and religion, which (unfortunately) makes him one of a select few scholars/sources on the Viking Age. He not only trudges through a forest of confusing (mis)information about this age, but is also able to keep the mystique and excitement surrounding the Sagas intact when he relates them to his audience. His dry humor makes this lecture (as well as his videos) a prime example of proper edutainment, weighing (thankfully) heavily on the education side. One of his most informative areas of expertise is his linguistic knowledge that can illuminate key concepts about the "ancient" as well as modern Scandinavian culture.

Pretty Great

Really interesting and well read lecture. Listened to it on the way to and from work, would have liked memorizing a lot more than i could, as it is quite extensive in some aspects and makes you want to research in more detail in others as it covers a wide range if topics. Does not require any prior knowledge, but is also great for someone that has some basic understanding of norse culture & mythology.

Absolutely Brilliant Course

Absolutely brilliant course and greatly recommended lecture for all, who are interested in Norse mythology and free of any ideological stuff that unfortunatelly accompanies a lot of what has been written about the deities and magic of Northern Europe.

Understanding Norse Myth

Norse Myth have always been a mystery to me. That's why I ignored them and didn't care about them.
Due to the modern adaptations in current pop culure (Marvel's Thor, God of war & others), I became interested again and wanted to know what the original myths really were about, how those people thought at that time & if there is wisdom to extract for nowadays.
The norse myths have a certain gloom in them that echos times of turmoil today

Jackson Crawford the Viking cowboy from Colorado really helped me to further my understanding.
Here in the first audiobook or book by him to my knowledge, he offers sound interpretations and provides the neccessary background for understanding. Not only that, he also is an expert in ancient norse and occasionally reads these texts in their original tone to his fans on his youtube channel.

A must hear for every fan of the Norse Myths and I would love to see even more.
His voice is very suited to listen to, which makes the experience even better.
