Über diesen Titel
From Napoleon's revolutionary campaigns to the way insurgency, terrorism, and nuclear weaponry have defined the nature of warfare in the 21st century, the results of military strategy have changed the course of history. These 24 thought-provoking lectures give you an inside look at both the content and historical context of the world's greatest war strategists.
From the triremes and hoplites of ancient Greece to the Special Forces in 21st-century Afghanistan, strategy is the process by which political objectives are translated into military action - using the means at a nation's disposal to compel an enemy to bend to its political will.
In this concise and rigorous survey, Professor Wilson introduces: Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War; Sun Tzu's famous The Art of War; Machiavelli's strategy for a republic with a citizen-army; Jomini, Clausewitz, and the Napoleonic revolution in warfare; the development of naval strategy and the rise of airpower; Mao Tse-tung, David Galula, and Roger Trinquier's reflections on insurgency and counterinsurgency and their influence on the U.S. Army's Field Manual 3-24; Just-war theory, from Thucydides' Melian Dialogue to Operation Iraqi Freedom; nuclear war, terrorism, and other strategic challenges for the 21st century.
You'll come away from this course with new insight that will allow you to take an informed, active interest in political and military debates - which ultimately will determine the course of our nation.

It's complicated
In terms of content, these lessons are usually impressively instructive, excellently structured and very comprehensible.
A disadvantage for an audience outside the United States, however, is that the focus of the analysis is - explicitly - the U.S. perspective. This is sometimes interesting, sometimes amusing, and sometimes simply annoying, especially when established controversies - for example, about the motivations that led to the second Iraq war - are simply left out. Obviously, no one ever claimed that Iraq had hidden weapons of mass destruction, and this was not one of the main arguments used to try to convince the world community that the war was "just."
Regarding the considerations about terrorism, the lesson is on a state of affairs "during al-Qaeda, but before ISIS," which, of course, cannot be blamed on the course. On the contrary, it is interesting how a lecturer analyzes the lessons that had been learned up to that point, and the recipient knows all that is to come ...
Regarding the lecturer, it should be said that for a listener who is not a native speaker of English, Professor Wilson has cultivated a number of unpleasant habits that unnecessarily complicate listening comprehension or are at least irritating, for example, when he delivers sentences over long periods with a speech melody that always sounds the same and affected, slips into an erratic and washed-out pronunciation, or - frequently - simply swallows the last syllables of a word at the end of a sentence. Sometimes, therefore, one has to repeat sentences or sections, which at some point makes the listener impatient and strained.
I learned a lot with this course, but I was glad when it was over.
