Über diesen Titel

A princess isn’t supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this “bewitching and fascinating” (Tamora Pierce) retelling of “Sleeping Beauty”, true love is more than a simple fairy tale.

“Walter’s spellbinding debut is for all the queer girls and women who’ve been told to keep their gifts hidden and for those yearning to defy gravity.” (O: The Oprah Magazine)

Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.

You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily ever after.

Utter nonsense.

Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.

Until I met her.

Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she...cares for me. Even though a power like mine was responsible for her curse.

But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating - and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps together we could forge a new world.

Nonsense again. Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I -

I am the villain.

A re-telling I can get behind

Don't know what I expected when I started this after the internet had bullied me into buying it. But what I found was a lovely-paced book with great writing and character building. The main character dances between hero and villain throughout the book and her inner struggles are very well portrayed as a reader you really feel for her. If she's angry you understand why and when she is happy you feel it too. I loved the romance and thought the buildup of their relationship was very well done. Some plot twists I guessed before they happened but others I didn't and even if I did, it was still interesting to see how they played out. Can recommend it to anyone who likes queer fiction and/or fairytale retellings. Lots of fun!

Frustrating

Though I enjoyed the beginning of this book, I got frustrated with it more and more, mostly because of the sheer lack of intelligence of the main character. She could have avoided so many bad situations if she just used her brain a little. Also, the tone of the book was such an immature version of feminism that really makes me roll my eyes. We don’t have to hate men just because we love women.

The author tried…and failed

Overpowered protagonist done wrong. This books does everything you should NOT do when working with an overpowered protagonist (who has a backstory one can only describe as edgy for the sake of being edgy and insane). The author also tries very hard to avoid stereotypes by replacing them with something a little less stereotypical.
The characters are flat, predictable and their only job is to help the protagonist to develop her character, for better and for worse. The author also likes to info dump lore with inner monologue instead of introducing necessary story elements naturally as the plot progresses.

I honestly rooted for that annoyed immortal guy at court, cause I would also be very annoyed to be there.

The narrator was the only one who did a decent job, great range of voices and dialects.
