Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party—or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people.

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, muddle Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones—the most elusive of all faeries—lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she’ll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all—her own heart.

The book, so full of fairies and enchantments, enchanted me as well. I loved all of the nods to academia, it’s politics, and peculiarities, but set in such a charming version of our own world. This is one of the best unreliable narrators that I’ve come across, perfectly factual but almost incapable of understanding people’s (at least humans) motivations.

I couldn’t stop listening

I enjoyed this book a lot. It was sweet and funny and fascinating. I love fae books if not used as a Mary Sue trope, and in this case it is a strong willed logic female protagonist looking for fae and the truth. I definitely will look into the other books of the series.

A very good book about folklore and fae

I haven’t enjoyed a book like this in a while! It‘s the perfect cozy fantasy, it’s charming, but never boring, it keeps you engaged at all times and the humor in this book surprised me, I laughed out loud quite a few times! Highly recommend!!

Loved this so much!

i loved the narrative voice of the heroine. She is so clever and fearless. At first one can hardly even guess her gender, if the name hadn't been on the cover. The ingenuity and creativity of the protagonist is refreshing. Nothing seems predictable. It is very entertaining. It encorporates many aspects of folklore and manages to stay away from one-dimensional friends/foes. Everybody is theoretically capable of intelligent thought. The differences between individual people are just as vast, as the differences between species. Nothing not to like! Love it a lot!
