Once again, F.T. Lukens succeeds in drawing readers into a fantastical world where magic and paranormal beings exist as naturally as people of all gender identities and sexual orientations. One of my favourite things about their books is experiencing worlds where a person’s gender and pronouns are simply accepted, and no one makes a fuss about who dates whom. It wouldn’t take much for life itself to feel like a fairytale…

LOVE AT SECOND SIGHT is no exception. While the adventure of Cam and his friends is set against this wonderfully inclusive backdrop, it still touches on prejudices and situations every queer person can relate to. In fact, I personally believe that with this book Lukens isn’t just telling another fantasy story, but also deliberately addressing queer experiences. The parallels between the challenges the protagonist faces after discovering his magical abilities and real-life queer struggles are hard to miss. This includes what might be the most brutal scene in all of Lukens’ works – where killing, blood, and gore are not uncommon.

Beyond this meta-layer, F.T. Lukens once again delivers an entertaining fantasy adventure about a teenager and his – as always – colourful, interesting group of friends, brought vividly to life – as always – by the fantastic Kevin R. Free.
While you don’t need the gift of foresight to guess the general direction of the plot, there are enough charming details to keep the story fresh and enjoyable. And yes, there’s a cute gay werewolf love story – haven’t all gay teenage boys dreamt about that at least once?!
So grab your broom or your bike (whichever you prefer 😉) and join Cameron as he uncovers his new magical identity – and tries to solve the mystery of who’s going to murder the mysterious girl his werewolf crush seems connected to.
