Great overview of leadership
Mike Krzyzewski does an amazing job of teaching how to be a good leader. I wish that all leaders would read and reflect upon this book. He makes a metaphor that a team is like a fist. You can have strong fingers (strong individuals) but when they stay apart they are weak and can be broken. When the fingers band together into a tight fist they are stronger and more resilient. Likewise, when you point fingers in a team you are sticking one finger out by itself which can be easily broken. We should always support one another, a failure of one person in the team is a failure of all and by working together and supporting one another, we can move past those and learn. This is also true for large companies, a large company where each person acts as an individual and competes with others is not nearly as strong as a smaller company in which everyone works together collectively. Instead of pointing fingers and blame, it is better to sit together as a team and ask what everyone can do to improve conjointly. Sharing responsibility makes a stronger close knit team.
Asking a team player questions causes them to think and work out the answers by themselves so that they remember it next time. How can you turn defeat into something to help us? Mistakes are not failures, they are experiences to help us grow and improve. Do not make excuses or blames, find lessons learned and accept the situation. Staying calm, focused, and confident is key. A good leader walks with confidence and shows confidence in their team. Showing confidence in their team realizes the teams potential. As a leader, you have to be ok with your people going to someone else to learn. Companies are often afraid of their best workers being poached, but if you know your team member well, then you should wish them the best in their success and know that hey can learn a lot from someone else and be confident that they will come back to you having grown.
Numbers on a scoreboard are not the most important thing on a team. Focusing on the well-being of your team and its members and on their growth and success will automatically raise the team up and will show in the numbers.
Overall I found the lessons in this book helpful and reading it is a good reminder of how to best lead.
