Über diesen Titel

Universally acclaimed, rapturously reviewed, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography, and an instant New York Times best seller, Chanel Miller's breathtaking memoir "gives readers the privilege of knowing her not just as Emily Doe, but as Chanel Miller the writer, the artist, the survivor, the fighter" (The Wrap).

"I opened Know My Name with the intention to bear witness to the story of a survivor. Instead, I found myself falling into the hands of one of the great writers and thinkers of our time. Chanel Miller is a philosopher, a cultural critic, a deep observer, a writer's writer, a true artist. I could not put this phenomenal book down." (Glennon Doyle, number one New York Times best-selling author of Love Warrior and Untamed)

"Know My Name is a gut-punch, and in the end, somehow, also blessedly hopeful." (Washington Post)

She was known to the world as Emily Doe when she stunned millions with a letter. Brock Turner had been sentenced to just six months in county jail after he was found sexually assaulting her on Stanford's campus. Her victim impact statement was posted on BuzzFeed, where it instantly went viral - viewed by 11 million people within four days, it was translated globally and read on the floor of Congress; it inspired changes in California law and the recall of the judge in the case. Thousands wrote to say that she had given them the courage to share their own experiences of assault for the first time.

Now, she reclaims her identity to tell her story of trauma, transcendence, and the power of words. It was the perfect case, in many ways - there were eyewitnesses, Turner ran away, physical evidence was immediately secured. But her struggles with isolation and shame during the aftermath and the trial reveal the oppression victims face in even the best-case scenarios. Her story illuminates a culture biased to protect perpetrators, indicts a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and, ultimately, shines with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life.

Know My Name will forever transform the way we think about sexual assault, challenging our beliefs about what is acceptable and speaking truth to the tumultuous reality of healing. It also introduces listeners to an extraordinary writer, one whose words have already changed our world. Entwining pain, resilience, and humor, this memoir will stand as a modern classic.

I was a bit hesitant at first to pick it up bc of the subject but so glad I did. Highly recommend it

a must read!

This is a book that should be on reading lists of colleges and universities, but also on reading lists of everyone else, men, women, old and young.

This story isn’t a crime thriller or even true crime thriller where you can follow a tale of how the perpetrator gets caught. It Is the story of a young woman, which was assaulted at a party by a young man and all that followed after.

I liked how Chanel slowly unfolds her journey and sprinkling it with feeling of her own, milestones in her journey and also what happened in the court case.

The essential parts in here are Chanel‘s voice, how she makes clear what it means to be a victim and how a victim is treated after an assault. How you are assaulted continually afterwards, by the public opinion, lawyers, the legal system and various people who think they know better.

This is a great and moving piece on how we as a society should deal with rape, sexual assault and victims in general.

A must read for everyone.

Moving, gripping and something everyone should read

Thanks Chanel for putting in words what is so difficult to verbalize for so many of us.
It’s also written incredibly well. What a talent!

So relevant on so many levels.

I have no words. Such an important book and amazingly written book! I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to read that book, but having to read the victim statement aloud again? You could hear Chanel taking breaks to catch herself which made it even more emotional. Such a strong woman!

So important!

What a powerful story! It was definitely not easy to sit through but very important that you do! Thank you Chanel for using your voice and being brave, standing up for yourself and so many other women in the process.

Outstanding

This book is amazing. After hearing this book, other writing styles seem so clumsy, boring and shallow.

Wow

This book was incredibly moving and very well written. The author takes you along and makes you understand, just deeply internalize some truths about what people and words can do to you. It helped me understand what women feel in certain situations and it made me grow up a bit more, and I don't even feel hit over the head with a lesson.

From an editorial standpoint I wish it would be a bit shorter. I think lots of people would be putting the book aside after about half of it. I understand the things needed to be said, but yeah, 15 hours is a lot

Emotional, easy to understand, instructional

Literally everyone should listen to this book. The story is so important and Chanel's writing and reading are exquisite. Please listen and pass it on
