Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Tom moved to South Boston ("Southie") to take over the family's gasoline station and auto repair business during Boston's most violent decades in recent history. It was the era of Mobster Whitey Bulger's reign of terror, and Tom was right in the thick of it. He was persuaded by friends and family to compile his extraordinary experiences and document them in book form. The result was "The Constant Outsider, Memoirs of a South Boston Mechanic." Cirignano's second book is a fictional adaptation of his first. In "67 Cents: Creation of a Killer" Tom, using the character "Nick," takes a different path than he did in real life, saying "Yes" to each and every offer that was actually made to him by the Mob. Those offers were numerous, and even included an offer to murder for him, for just the cost of the bullet. Nick's life within "67 Cents" becomes quite intense. What is the real Thomas Cirignano like? "I would describe myself as a person who appreciates and is curious about all the wonders, beauty, and adventure life has to offer. I try not to let fear hold me back from trying the things that strike me as interesting, challenging, or exciting. Although I've tried many things, (some ill-advised) I don't claim to be an expert at any of them. Those who have read my book would tend to agree. As for some unusual facts about me, here is a sampling. I've out-run the cops in high-speed chases on two occasions; once in my Dodge Challenger, and once on my motorcycle through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I regret those incidents, and consider them to be the most unwise things I have ever done. I foolishly risked my own life, plus the lives of many innocent people and dutiful police officers. I've totaled two cars, taking down telephone poles. I crashed my motorcycle into a guard-rail at 80 MPH. I was extremely lucky to have survived all three of those accidents. On another occasion, I crashed my ultralight aircraft in the ocean and sank like a rock. I was barely able to swim to the surface. To top things off, I've had guns pointed at my head, ready to fire, more times than I like to remember, including a confrontation with Whitey Bulger himself. The list goes on-and-on. I can't believe I'm still alive. Somebody up-there must really like me, or they have some special plan in store for me. You can read the details of those events, and much more, in The Constant Outsider: Memoirs of a South Boston Mechanic.” My hope is that some readers might learn a thing or two from my mistakes." ~Tom Tom grew up and worked for many years in Boston's predominantly Irish working class neighborhoods. He owned and operated an automotive service station on East Third Street in South Boston until 1987. After selling that business, he relocated to Ft. Myers, Florida where he managed an office of AAIM Realty Group, Inc. and sold real estate for eleven years. His lifelong battle with scoliosis and chronic back problems eventually forced him to give up that work as well. Over the years, Tom became a certified scuba diver, ultralight aircraft pilot, avid boater, and motorcycle enthusiast. Upon relocating once again to Massachusetts with his family, he served two terms on the Freetown-Lakeville Regional School Committee, and has served on several other town committees and commissions. Having studied journalism, Tom is an occasional contributing writer to The New Bedford Standard-Times Newspaper, and served as an advisory member on the Standard-Times Editorial Board in 2010.
