Who am I? I grew up in suburban Detroit and has since lived in several different states. From Maine to California to Texas to Florida to Tennessee, I've been blessed with the opportunity to experience a wide spectrum of American life. I have worked as many different careers as he has places he's lived. I've been an employee, business owner, award winning salesman in two fields, a Politian and now an author. For a short time, I had the privilege to serve as the Township Supervisor/Safety Director in my adopted hometown in Michigan, where I had a successful career running a local refuse company and was elected to the post in the early nineteen nineties. I'm married to a sweetheart, Donna and between us we have two daughters and six grandchildren. When I'm not writing, I'm busy exploring the mountains or painting one of a kind artwork or taking spectacular landscape photos which I've been known to sell along with other artwork at local flea markets and fairs. With my foray into being a published author, I'm once again opening a new chapter in my life. I've reinvented himself several times as life has presented new challenges and writing is the latest and the greatest reinvention yet. I likes quotes and a couple of my favorites are; "The most successful people in life are those who are good at plan B or in my case plan C, D, E, F, or G." and "Success is the river of life. Perseverance is the boat you sail upon it." Of course I wrote them both. I'm a former business owner, award winning salesman, reformed politician and now an author! Write what you know, write it with passion and set the world on fire with your dreams! My entire life I've had to continually reinvent myself time and again. With each new challenge, I've had to discover a new strength within myself to help me move on with life despite the circumstances that I've faced. It wasn't always easy, but then, if success was easy everybody would be successful. I will not tell you I am another Hemmingway but I can say I am an original. I won't be telling you how my writing is superior to anyone's only that my stories will be the best story I can tell. I try very hard to make each of my stories entertaining above all else. The quote below sums up me and my writing style, quite well. The most important part of any book isn't the cover, or the writer's style, or the grammar or punctuation. It's the story! If the story doesn't knock the socks off the readers, it doesn't matter where the comas go! -Author Cliff Roberts I also write poetry-though at the moment not as much as I write stories. Edit Lament By CLIFF ROBERTS I have no job I have no life I live for my book I may lose my wife I stay up all night thinking words I struggle all day Sleeping with crowing birds I write and rewrite Each time I'm filled with delight Each time I'm filled with dread I'm beginning to believe I'll finish a day after, I'm dead. _____________________________________________ OPPORTUNITY'S KNOCKING By Cliff Roberts 2012 Opportunity's knocking, pounding at the door And I sit hiding behind the sofa on the floor I peeked at the barer of the good tidings you see and he's wearing workman's clothes and that's not me. He's covered in dirt from his head to his toes His brow is furled and there's dirt even on his nose There's sweat dripping down from his curly locks It's been almost an hour and yet, still he knocks The lad is persistent, a good trait I must say But I wish he'd give up and just go away. I'm waiting for the brass ring all shinny and such For it will impart to me, the Midas touch. Who wants to struggle and sweat by their brow I want to be a man of leisure not the plow And yet he's still knocking, knocking quite loud What makes him so stalwart; makes him so proud. To have sent him here surely fate must jest Does he not know, I'm waiting for only the best Perhaps, I should answer, just tell him to go For whatever he's selling the answer is "no!" I have my standards from which I'll not break I cannot afford to act foolish or to make a mistake Too much of life rides upon this to go with the likes of him When the opportunity is right, he'll come knocking again So I sit on the floor hiding you see For I must keep a distance between work and me Whatever he's selling the answer is "no!" With him I simply cannot go! His hands they are dirty, his clothes they are too He's so bogged down working, he hasn't got a clue I am promised the brass ring, all polish and shine I must be patient for fate to drop a life in this hand of mine Opportunity's knocking __________________________________________________________________________ You may think you're writing about a murder or a robbery or some God awful dragon, but in reality you're writing about the people who inhabit your story.
