Sometimes - well most of the time actually - I'm known as Janet Tanner, for the simple reason that is my real name! The one under which I have written more than 20 books, such as THE BLACK MOUNTAINS, ORIENTAL HOTEL, and most recently, A QUESTION OF GUILT. Complicated? It gets worse! The real Amelia Carr is my seven-year-old granddaughter ... A few years ago, when I began writing for Headline, they wanted a new name, and Amelia was kind enough to let me use hers. I'm very proud of that, and actually, I think she is too! Now - about me. I've been making up stories ever since I was a little girl. My first readers were my classmates at Grammar School - I wrote serials on exercise book paper which were passed from hand to hand. This came to an abrupt end, however, when I was caught scribbling under the desk in a chemistry lesson. My writing career went on hold until after I was married, with a baby daughter. To ease the loneliness as well as to try and earn some money I began writing short stories and serials, which I sold to women's magazines. After a few years I wrote my first novel, and never looked back. I've visited fabulous places and met fabulous people during the course of my research - I've been to Hong Kong and Singapore, and Darwin, Canberra, Sydney & Bendigo in Australia to name but a few, and I've done some amazing things. Recently I crewed on the tall ship the Lord Nelson to gain experience of sailing for my latest book, THE SECRET SHE KEPT. Research for my first Amelia Carr, DANCE WITH WINGS, was a great deal easier, since the background is flying - the heroine, Nancy, an American girl, ferried planes for the RAF during World War 2. I know about flying - I have a private pilot's licence, probably my proudest achievement, since my navigational skills left something to be desired, and taking off alone for the first time requires a huge leap of faith! I am married, with two lovely grown-up daughters and four grandchildren, two girls and two boys. The eldest, Tabitha, is 14, and the famous Amelia is 7. The boys, Barnaby and Daniel, fit in between. I also have a German Shepherd dog named Gypsy, whom we rescued, half-starved and flea-ridden - in April, 2012. We've always had rescue dogs - it is so rewarding to see them blossom in a happy home. Gypsy is our fourth GSD - we've also had labradors, golden retrievers, and a sweet little mongrel, Millie, who was rescued in Naples, Italy.
