Incredible Story incredibly read!
One of those rare books that really take you on the journey of the characters. A book that makes you feel everything that happens and gave me deeper sense of what it must feel like to come to a state or country without anything but hope, wanting a better life. Since I’m from Europe this topic spoke to me particularly since it’s so relevant and splits our societies. Further I loved the story for its historical content. I have never heard of dust storms and it was scary and breathtaking to hear about it and what it does to animals and humans.
An absolutely incredible story that I won’t forget and again perfectly read by Whelan.

Fesselnde und traurige Geschichte
Ein tolles Hörbuch. Als Leser bekommt man einen guten Einblick in die Geschichte des Dust Bowl und seinen Folgen. Jeder hat schon von der Route 66 gehört, aber nur wenige kennen die traurige Geschichte der Farmer, die sich auf den Weg nach California gemacht haben. Die Geschichte hätte noch länger sein können, so gern habe ich sie gehört.

AN ABSOLUTE MUST!!!
I am German and did not know very much about the drought that went on for so many years, aside from reading "The Grapes of Wrath" in Englush major in school and a few 1940s movies that touched on the subject. I had heard the word "Okies" before, but did not know the real deep hatred and plain ignorance that it really stood for.
I admit I came across this book by mere chance, as I was looking for something new. Knowing that this author was great from past experience, I looked her up on Audible and found this novel and the great reviews. The topic did not really trigger my interest, but I just knew that Kristin Hannah's novels had always touched my heart, and boy was I right.
This book has opened my eyes to a period of time in the American history that is rarely talked about anymore, but it should and needs to be remembered more. What those people had to go through, inflicted upon them firstly by nature, and then more horridly by "fellow humans" is unbelievable. The fact that they went on despite the odds against them, trying so hard not to give up hope, to keep their faith in the American Dream...it was so amazing.
I loved all the protagonists of this story, feared with them, was happy with them, cried with them...oh boy did I cry (do get that box of tissues...it is heart wrenching).
Julia Whelan brings them all to life before your ears with her astonishing way of reading, giving everyone their unique voice, giving them all their own soul. It was such a pleasure listening to her...I never wanted the story to end.
Kristin Hannah & Julia Whelan are a real dream team, and I do hope they will work together again in the future!
I fully recommend the purchase of this wonderful and inspirational book!
And to everyone reading this now, tell your loved ones how much they mean to you before it is too late. You will forever carry that regret in your heart.

Bildgewaltige Geschichte im wahren mit viel Gefühl
Geschichtlektion at its best.
Das Hörbuch hat mich in jeder Beziehung hineingezogen. Auch das Interview am Ende ist sehr hörenswert.

Epic story on a mother finding her own voice in the American dust bowl
It‘s a long story, for sure. But once you got to know the characters you just want to find out how the fare in life. It is a book about a silent, shy woman having to stand up for herself in the era of the American depression. It is also a book about friendship, climate change, migration, and love: for your family, for your own land. I really enjoyed the reader‘s interpretation (Julia Whelan) and I loved the little discussion with the author.

My favourite book for many years
I cried, I couldn't stop listening - absolutely fascinating. I was devastated when the book ended. Best speaker ever.
