  • Hi, I’m Keegan Fleigner. When I was in first grade, I was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. Since that time, sports have played a huge role in changing my life. So I want to show the world how all kinds of sports can help all kinds of people with all kinds of mental and emotional challenges.

Welcome to Sports on the Spectrum.

The purpose of Sports on the Spectrum is to provide a forum for athletes and coaches with social, emotional and/or developmental health conditions (like Autism, ADHD, Bi-Polarity, Depression, etc.) where sports has been life changing in addressing or assisting these types of conditions. I want to connect with and help others who also have conditions that aren’t well understood, and who share my love of playing and/or coaching sports, to talk about experiences on and off the playing field. I created Sports on the Spectrum not only to tell my story, but to share our stories. It’s my hope that together we can encourage more people with these conditions to try sports! And that perhaps we can help others to better understand all of the great things that people with Autism, ADHD, Depression, etc. can do - including playing or coaching sports.

  • Jamal Hill
    Jan 16 2024

My guest today is Jamal Hill. When Jamal was ten, he was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a hereditary neurological condition that can result in progressive loss of muscle tissue and touch sensation in the body. Despite this severe medical challenge, Jamal has persevered to become one of the top Paralympic swimmers in the world today and is now a Speedo sponsored, ten-time national champion and Paralympic medalist, winning bronze in the men's S9 50 meter freestyle event at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

Out of the pool, Jamal founded Swim Up Hill, which works to provide swim instruction to middle and low-income people around the world to help lower the risk of drowning, with the goal of teaching one million people how to swim annually by 2028. This initiative has earned Jamal much recognition, including being nominated for the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award at the 2023 ESPYs.

Please join me in welcoming Jamal Hill to Sports on the Spectrum.

  • Episode 15 Steve Hodge
    Aug 5 2023

My guest today is Steve Hodge.

Steve played basketball collegiately and professionally around the world for many years before becoming a FIBA-certified referee and then later going into coaching.

After tenures at places such as the LA Clippers and Caltech, Steve became the Varsity Boys’ Basketball Head Coach at Pacifica Christian High School as I entered my senior year there. And while I wasn’t the star player and didn’t play for many minutes that year, Steve was humble enough to name me as one of three team captains, instilling a sense of value and leadership that I still hold dear.

Additionally, Steve is the Chief Operations Officer of Breakthrough Sports, an award-winning youth sports program for kids playing sports like basketball, volleyball, and baseball throughout Southern California.

Please join me in welcoming Steve Hodge to Sports on the Spectrum.
