    The book "Twelve Ordinary Men: How the Master Shaped His Disciples for Greatness, And What He Wants To Do With You" by John MacArthur was extremely helpful. MacArthur has taken all of Scripture as well as any extra biblical, but still historically credible, literature to help put together an excellent understanding of each disciple/apostle.

    I am in no way associated with John MacArthur or his ministry. However, I do highly recommend this book as well as much of his writings and teachings. The link is too long to include but the paperback is currently only $10 and it is worth every penny.
