Über diesen Titel

The brand new novella in the Sunday Times #1 bestselling Rivers of London series.

****

THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY ACROSS THE POND...

When ex-FBI Agent Patrick Henderson calls in an 'X-Ray Sierra India' incident, the operator doesn't understand. He tells them to pass it up the chain till someone does.

That person is FBI Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds. Arriving snowbound Northern Wisconsin, she finds that a tornado has flattened half the town - and there's no sign of Henderson.

Things soon go from weird to worse, as neighbours report unsettling sightings, key evidence goes missing, and the snow keeps rising - cutting off the town, with no way in or out...

As the clues lead to the coldest of cold cases - a cursed expedition into the frozen wilderness - Reynolds follows a trail from the start of the American nightmare, to the horror that still lives on today...

the way she dies the male voice irritates me a lot. otherwise her performance is fine, but it pulls me out so much and makes the men sound like caveman and somehow all the same.

the story is Okey, I don't like the speaker much

The spin-offs in the rivers..-universe are great fun and give the opportunity to explore the magic tradition of other countries and continents, or the inner workings of side characters. It is great that all these other voices from the series have different narrators, who are usually superb.
In this case though, it's a little complicated. Whilst P. Rawlins is doing a perfect job giving a voice to willfull, ambitious and proud Agent Reynolds (especially the acting of the child in the last third and of the religious reflections and monologues is flawless), her voicing of male Charakters is hard to listen to. They all sound the same and like caricatures. This could be partly overlooked, since we only get to know the other characters through Reynolds eyes, if there wasn't a romance unfolding.
Unfortunately, this will be the audio book of the series to which I will return the least times..

Good story, unconvincing narration

Oh boy, where to start? I really liked Kimberly Reynolds in the Peter Grant books so I was looking forward to this little spin-off. AND I was really thankful, that it's narrated by a woman. I've listened to the german version before the english one and that is read by the same bloke that reads Peter Grant. Now that's a really strange sensation.

Here's the problem though. As good as Penelope Rawlins ist in the role of Kimberly Reynolds it's just downright painful to hear her speak in a man's voice or what she seems to think sounds like a mans voice. It's deep alright, but all the men sound the same and they all sound - pardon my French - dull, dimwitted and very old. For the first hour or so I thought Bill was way past 70. She really does a good job with the little girl in the story, then comes a 14 year old boy... 70 again. So that really makes it a lot less joyful to listen to.

As for the story. I'll make it short as I don't want to spoil. It's just no comparison to Peter Grant. Yes, it's only a novella and so the story unfolds more quickly (too quickly for my taste), but that doesn't have to be a problem. The spin off around Tobias Winter ("The October Man") was great. But this one just seems rushed and a bit shallow. Ben takes a lot of shortcuts with the story and it just lacks the thoughtful background that makes "Rivers of London" so joyful.

A bit disappointing, really.

The performing actress's voice is squeaky and sounds like AI. Hardly bearable listening to. Such a pity because the other Aaronovitch books have been performed greatly, I really didn't expect that.

Bad voice performer

Not the strongest of stories in the Rivers of London series.

And there seems to be some audio issues, since some parts are really hard to understand since they sound strangely muffled.

Issues with the recording?
