They were eleven when they sent a killer to prison. They were heroes . . . but they were liars.
Kate Alice Marshall's What Lies in the Woods is a thrilling novel about friendship, secrets, betrayal, and lies—and having the courage to face the past.
Naomi Shaw used to believe in magic. Twenty-two years ago, she and her two best friends, Cassidy and Olivia, spent the summer roaming the woods, imagining a world of ceremony and wonder. They called it the Goddess Game. The summer ended suddenly when Naomi was attacked. Miraculously, she survived her seventeen stab wounds and lived to identify the man who had hurt her. The girls’ testimony put away a serial killer, wanted for murdering six women. They were heroes.
And they were liars.
For decades, the friends have kept a secret worth killing for. But now Olivia wants to tell, and Naomi sets out to find out what really happened in the woods—no matter how dangerous the truth turns out to be.
“What Lies In the Woods is a gorgeous fever dream of a novel about the dangers lurking in the hearts and imaginations of little girls. Kate Alice Marshall deftly charts a winding path through her creepy woods, doubling back and changing course to build a labyrinth of secrets and lies in which I was delighted to lose myself for hours. Hands down, it's the best thriller I've read in a long, long time.”—Chandler Baker, bestselling author of The Husbands

Complicated, dark, and absolutely brilliant.
After finishing it, I felt uneasy and a little disturbed—it really left me questioning not just the characters but even my own relationships. The twists? They’re twisting, and the way they unravel is both shocking and deeply thought-provoking.
The story begins with a memory from the past before moving into the present, and while I initially found the timeline a bit confusing, I quickly got the hang of it. As the narrative delves deeper into the characters’ lives, friendships, and secrets, I was blown away by how well Kate Alice Marshall (if we’re talking about What Lies in the Woods) developed her main characters. The dynamic between Naomi, Cassidy, and Olivia felt authentic and relatable, and even the side characters were given depth and purpose—they weren’t just filler. I caught myself feeling real emotions for them, which doesn’t happen often in thrillers.
While I pride myself on figuring out plot twists early, this book still managed to surprise me. I spotted a few turns coming but was completely blindsided by the ending. It’s a conclusion that should feel uplifting with its message about forgiveness and trust, yet it left me with a sense of sadness too.
If you’re looking for a dark thriller that explores trust, friendship, and self-reflection, this book hits all those notes. It also serves as a stark reminder to trust your instincts, question what doesn’t feel right, and stay true to yourself. And, as a life lesson—never climb into cars with strangers.
