Yet for nearly all of its six million years of existence, human society had none of these things. While the gulf that divides us from our primitive ancestors may seem unbridgeably wide, we can glimpse much of our former lifestyle in those largely traditional societies still or recently in existence. In "the world until yesterday" we listen to an older very wise man reflecting on his life and the experiences he has made. It would not be fair to expect a human to write after "Guns,germs and steel" a second monument of our times and we should thus read his remaining books as an epilogue to his masterpiece. Still filled with astute observations and fine detail, but in essence reflecting on the insights that he worked out in his chef d'oeuvre: a book worthwhile its reading time and a possibility to meditate on the knowledge acquired from his first book while enjoying some new details that were forgotten in the past publications.

We take so many things of our society for granted and we never stop and think that most of what surrounds us was not here until recently.
This book is eye-opening!

Ich war seit langem begierig nach einem Vergleich zwischen modernen und alten Gesellschaftsformen und hier ist ein solcher von einer kenntnisreichen Universalität, wie man es sich nicht besser wünschen kann.
Nachdem ich schon viele englische Hörbücher gehört habe: für mich der beste Vorleser.

Faszinierend und äußerst lehrreich.
