Über diesen Titel
Mercenary. Galactic traveler. Survivor. Earl Dumarest is all those things - and more. For he claims to come from the mythical planet of Earth. And those claims have just attracted the attention of the sinister Cyclan. Stranded on Gath with no way off, Dumarest becomes embroiled in the schemes of a sadistic prince and a dying matriarch. Plots within plots unfold.
Dumarest is the key to their success. For amid the schemes of prince and matriarch alike, all have come to experience the legendary Winds of Gath. For when the star swarms come, when the music of the spheres rises over the the planet's valleys and mountains, the dead can speak to the living...and men go mad!
The Winds of Gath is the first volume in the Dumarest of Terra saga!

The original Traveller
Earl Dumarest has been travelling among the stars ever since he was ten - and escaped Earth as a stowaway. Ever since, he went from planet to planet, sometimes frozen in "low passage", sometimes under the influence of a time-delaying drug in "high passage". A capable knife-fighter, street-smart and experienced in the ways of a dog-eat-dog universe, armed with a sharp mind and not afraid to use it: Earl certainly knows how to survive.
His goal: Rediscover the planet of his childhood, Earth, which have become the stuff of legend nobody takes serious anymore. His opponents: A strange organization, and lots of little crooks.
This is the first out of some 33 planetary romances, and it leads us to the touristy planet Gath. Out of luck, cash and job opportunities, Earl gets involved in a major intrigue...
This audio book comes with a great reader/speaker and crisp audio quality. The story is a planetary romance slash space opera story from the late 1960s. It has aged far better than most, as long as you are willing to accept a universe that feels oddly like the late 19th century from time to time. E. C. Tubb knew how to spin his yarn, and the story is well-told. It kept me interested with its twists and turns, which already puts it above average.
What I loved most, though, were the many little details I know from the Traveller pen & paper roleplaying game. For any serious keeper of that game, the Earl Dumarest stories are a treasure trove of plot hooks and deja-vus. Everyone else - if you like old-school space adventures from before the IT revolution: You might want to consider trying the Dumarest saga. While there is a long story arc, every novel of the saga stands well on its own feet.
